Andoni Iraola Appointed Liverpool Head Coach on Two-Year Deal
Andoni Iraola says he is “ready for the challenge” after signing a two-year deal to take over as Liverpool head coach.
The 43-year-old has replaced Arne Slot, who was sacked at the weekend just one season after guiding the Reds to the Premier League title.
The former Bournemouth manager arrives at Anfield after delivering the Cherries their greatest ever top-flight finish in 6th place and qualifying for the UEFA Europa League.
That was only one position and three points behind Liverpool and gave Bournemouth a place in next season’s Europa League.
The Spaniard announced in April that he would leave Bournemouth this summer and he had been linked with Crystal Palace and AC Milan.
After interest from both Iraola has decided to takeover at Anfield and will take the Reds into the UEFA Champions League despite the club finishing on just 60 points last season, 25 behind Premier League winners Arsenal.
“I’m really excited, really excited,” said Iraola. “Because obviously you know about Liverpool, you know that it’s a big club, a massive club, one of the biggest in the world.
“You don’t need a lot of things to get attracted by Liverpool. Liverpool is Liverpool.”
He added: “I think Liverpool gives me the chance to coach top players, and top players give you the chance to fight for titles. To win titles.
“Obviously when you arrive at a place, you cannot promise everything. You cannot promise. But it’s true that I understand where I’m coming and what is expected.
“I’m ready for the challenge.”
Remembering Bournemouth’s trip to Liverpool almost 10 months ago, Iraola said: “[Chiesa] scored and the place erupted. It was crazy, no? I want now to feel this from the other side.
“At the beginning when you arrive at any club, I think you need to kind of prove a little bit yourself.
“You need to earn the right also to belong. I want to do this as quickly as possible so I can also celebrate with them and I can be part properly of those celebrations.”
Andoni Iraola arrives at Anfield with a reputation as one of the brightest coaches in European football. The Spaniard has taken a relatively unconventional route to the top, building his career step by step rather than moving straight into one of the continent’s biggest jobs.
After short spells with AEK Larnaca in Cyprus and Spanish side Mirandés, where he guided the club to a remarkable Copa del Rey semi-final, Iraola really began to attract attention at Rayo Vallecano.
There, he won promotion to La Liga in his first season and established Rayo as one of Spain’s most entertaining and competitive teams, regularly punching above their weight against clubs with far greater resources.
His success in Spain earned him a move to Bournemouth in 2023. Although his side failed to win any of their opening nine Premier League matches, Bournemouth’s hierarchy remained patient and were rewarded for their faith.
In his first season, he guided the club to a record Premier League points tally, and over the following years continued to raise standards, helping Bournemouth achieve the best results in their history and establish themselves as a genuine force in the division.
