Arsenal send Premier League warning with huge Community Shield win over Manchester City
Arsenal made an emphatic start to the new season as they swept aside Manchester City 3-0 in the Community Shield at the Principality Stadium, lifting the trophy and laying down an early marker ahead of the Premier League campaign.
The Gunners needed just 23 seconds to take the lead, with Myles Lewis-Skelly producing a superb pass to release Riccardo Calafiori, who kept his composure to finish past Gianluigi Donnarumma.
It was a dream opening for Mikel Arteta’s side and a nightmare start to Enzo Maresca’s first competitive game in charge of Manchester City following Pep Guardiola’s decade at the club.
Arsenal continued to threaten and doubled their advantage before half-time. Summer signing Christos Tzolis played a key role, heading the ball across goal for Kai Havertz, whose effort found its way through Donnarumma.
The Italy goalkeeper endured a difficult afternoon and was again beaten shortly after the interval when Tzolis created Arsenal’s third.
Just three minutes into the second half, Tzolis picked out Martin Odegaard, who rounded Donnarumma before calmly finding the net to put Arsenal firmly in control.
The scoreline could have been even more convincing. Donnarumma was beaten before half-time when Odegaard’s effort appeared destined for the net, only for Josko Gvardiol to clear off the line after the goalkeeper had spilled the ball.
Bukayo Saka, returning to action for Arsenal, also passed up two promising opportunities as the Gunners repeatedly exposed weaknesses in City’s defence.
Arsenal’s defence answers its critics
While Arsenal’s attacking display will dominate the headlines, their defensive performance was equally encouraging.
Arteta’s side had conceded eight goals across four pre-season fixtures, raising questions about their defensive readiness ahead of the new campaign. Those concerns were put to one side in Cardiff as Arsenal repeatedly stood firm against City’s attacking threat.
David Raya saved from Erling Haaland before Lewis-Skelly reacted quickest to the rebound, with Ben White then throwing himself in front of a Jeremy Doku effort.
It was the kind of collective defensive commitment that Arteta will have wanted to see before the Premier League season gets underway.
City, meanwhile, struggled to find a response. Haaland and £116 million signing Elliot Anderson were both withdrawn after failing to make a significant impact, while the absence of Rodri was noticeable as Arsenal dominated key areas of the pitch.
Tzolis makes immediate impact
One of the biggest positives for Arsenal was the performance of Christos Tzolis.
The summer arrival made an immediate impression by contributing two assists on his competitive debut, becoming the first Arsenal player to register two or more assists on his debut for the club since Willian in September 2020.
His involvement in all three goals highlighted the attacking options now available to Arteta and provided an early indication of how the new signing could influence Arsenal’s season.
For City, Maresca has plenty to work on before the Premier League campaign begins. The new manager is tasked with finding a formula capable of replacing the consistency and success established during Guardiola’s reign, and this was a particularly difficult first test.
Team news provides transfer clues
Lewis-Skelly’s inclusion was notable after speculation surrounding his future, with the midfielder appearing firmly in Arteta’s plans after starting the Community Shield.
Gabriel Martinelli and Ethan Nwaneri were not involved, however, while City left Savinho out of their squad amid interest from Tottenham.
Rodri was also absent after recently returning from his World Cup break and receiving treatment on his back with a move to Barcelona in the works.
Jack Grealish did make his return to competitive action for City, coming off the bench for his first appearance for the club since May 2025.
Can Arsenal turn Community Shield success into Premier League glory?
History offers Arsenal reason for optimism, although the Community Shield is no guarantee of success in the months ahead.
Manchester City were the last side to win the Community Shield and then go on to lift the Premier League title, achieving the feat in 2018/19 as part of a domestic treble.
The previous three Community Shields had all been decided by penalties, making Arsenal’s 3-0 victory particularly emphatic. It was also the biggest winning margin in the competition since Arsenal defeated Manchester City by the same scoreline in 2014.
For Arteta, however, the significance of the performance goes beyond the trophy.
Arsenal are attempting to win back-to-back Premier League titles for the first time in 91 years, and their display against City suggested they could be ready to take another step towards that goal.
Arteta said: “A really good performance so early in the season. To play at that level and to show the desire that we showed and their reaction. I was really impressed and I said to them that I really enjoyed watching them play.
“I’m a bit surprised because in pre-season, we had three different groups. Eight or nine arrived just five days ago to get tested, they trained two days and to play in that manner is extremely impressive. It tells you how much those players want it, the level of desire we have and the quality we have.”
The Community Shield may only be the traditional curtain-raiser, but Arsenal could hardly have sent a stronger message to the rest of the Premier League.
