Forest Beat Villa in Europa League Semi-Final First-Leg After VAR Penalty Twist

Nottingham Forest hold a narrow lead in their Europa League semi-final after a 1-0 victory over Aston Villa at the City Ground, with Chris Wood’s second-half penalty separating the sides in a tense and controversial encounter.

Wood Strikes After VAR Intervention

The defining moment came in unusual fashion. Officials initially awarded a goal-kick when the ball appeared to have gone out of play, but a VAR review showed it had remained in before Omari Hutchinson fired it against the raised arm of Lucas Digne. The decision was overturned and a penalty given.

Wood made no mistake from the spot, powering his effort past Emiliano Martinez to give Forest the lead. It was a deserved breakthrough after Martinez had earlier produced a superb double save, first denying Igor Jesus’ volley and then preventing the rebound from crossing the line.

Villa Frustrated Despite Chances

Aston Villa had opportunities to level but lacked a clinical edge when it mattered. Ollie Watkins came closest, only to be denied from close range by Stefan Ortega. Unai Emery’s side controlled periods of possession but rarely looked convincing in the final third.

Even after conceding, Villa were measured in their approach, slowing the tempo and avoiding unnecessary risks.

Emery Angered by Anderson Challenge

The Villa manager was outspoken after the match about a first-half challenge from Elliot Anderson on Watkins that went unpunished. Emery described the incident as dangerous and questioned why VAR did not intervene, suggesting it could have caused serious injury.

While he praised the referee’s overall handling of the match, Emery made it clear his frustration lay with the lack of action from the video officials.

Forest Dream of European Return

For Forest, this was a night that echoed past glories. The City Ground crowd embraced the occasion, with reminders of their European Cup wins in 1979 and 1980 setting the scene.

Head coach Vitor Pereira praised his players’ spirit and togetherness, highlighting their resilience in a season that has seen significant challenges. His side now take a valuable advantage into the return leg, with belief growing that another famous European chapter could yet be written.
