He added: “I think we’re starting to get the way that we want to play and be offensive and attack the defence. I think we showed that today. We scored two and we could have scored more.”

Gakpo was also pleased with Liverpool’s performance while acknowledging there remains room for improvement under their new head coach.

“I think it was a great game from our side,” he said. “Obviously, some things we have to improve still, but a much-needed win from us.

“Very happy that we got the three points and happy with the performance.”
