Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool side is set to go head to head with a Fulham side led by their Portuguese Head Coach Marco Silva at Anfield in the 2023/24 Premier League season. The Reds will look to secure their return to the top four, as well as having their sights set on challenging the likes of Manchester City for the title once again. As for the Cottagers, they were for a time challenging for European football, and they will look to do so once again this term.
After a disappointing start to last season, Liverpool’s form was inconsistent until February, when they went on to lose only 2 of the last 15 matches of the Premier League season, winning 10 and drawing 3 times. This tremendous run of form ensured a 5th place finish for the Reds who finished with 67 points in total with a gap of just 4 points separating the Anfield club and Newcastle United, who occupied the final spot in the top four. The Reds secured qualification for the UEFA Europa League.
Mohamed Salah was Liverpool’s leading scorer last season, amassing 19 goals in 38 matches with fellow forward Roberto Firmino having the next best record of 11 goals last term. After Firmino, Darwin Núñez got 9 Goals whilst Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota got 7 goals each.
Overall, Liverpool scored 75 goals as a team over the course of the 2022/23 Premier League season, which was the 3rd best in the entire division. The only two teams to have a better goal scoring record last term were runners-up Arsenal (88) and Champions Manchester City (94). Defensively, the Reds alongside Chelsea, had the joint 4th best defensive record in the league only conceding 47 goals in all.
Jürgen Klopp has been Liverpool Head Coach for 8 years at the time of writing since his appointment in October 2015, becoming the permanent successor to Brendan Rodgers. The German Head Coach had just left German Giants Borussia Dortmund, with whom he enjoyed great success, winning 2 Bundesliga titles (2010/11 & 2011/12) and the DFB Pokal in the 2011/12 season.
Klopp has earned hero status at Anfield for the silverware that he has won for Liverpool across his almost decade long tenure at the club, including the Reds’ first ever Premier League title. During his time on Merseyside he has won: 1 Premier League title (2019/20), 1 FA Cup (2021/22), 1 EFL Cup (2021/22), 1 Community Shield (2022), 1 UEFA Champions League title (2018/19), UEFA Super Cup (2019) and 1 FIFA Club World Cup (2019).
Current Fulham Head Coach Marco Silva was appointed by the club in July 2021, ahead of the 2021/22 Championship season replacing the departing Scott Parker, who chose to move on to pastures new at Bournemouth. Silva led his Cottagers side to the Championship title winning 27 of their 46 matches, amassing 90 points – finishing ahead of Bournemouth. Last season, Fulham put together a strong campaign, finishing in 10th place with 52 points – 18 points clear of the drop.
Aleksandar Mitrovic led the way in terms of goals for Fulham last term with 14, whilst Carlos Vinícius and Willian were joint 2nd with a total of 5 goals each. Bobby De Cordova-Reid, Andreas Pereira and Manor Solomon all got 4 goals.
Liverpool and Fulham met for the very first time in an FA Cup 2nd Round tie at Craven Cottage in February 1912. Overall, the two clubs have met on 73 occasions at the time of writing, and it is the Reds who have the superior record of 42 wins compared to the Cottagers’ 13. There have been 18 draws between them to date.
The most recent match played between these two clubs took place on 3rd May 2023 in a Premier League fixture at Anfield, where the home team won 1-0 courtesy of a Mohamed Salah penalty in the closing stages of the first half (39’).
