Premier League 2026/27: Five Young Players Who Could Break Through This Season
Last campaign, players such as Eli Junior Kroupi, Igor Thiago and Nico O’Reilly made their mark at the top level, showing just how quickly emerging talent can establish itself in English football.
The 2026/27 season could provide another crop of breakthrough stars. Some have already made senior appearances, others are new arrivals looking to adapt to the demands of the Premier League, while a few have caught the eye during pre-season.
With that in mind, here are five players who could be ones to watch this season.
Sean Steur – Newcastle United

Age: 18
Position: Centre-midfield
Country: Netherlands
Newcastle United have made a number of changes to their squad this summer, but one of their earlier arrivals could prove to be an intriguing addition to Eddie Howe’s midfield.
Sean Steur joined from Ajax in a deal that could eventually be worth up to £23m, having made 25 appearances for the Dutch club in all competitions last season.
Comfortable operating as either a defensive midfielder or further forward, Steur is a technically gifted player who can use both feet and has impressed with his passing range.
Moving from the Eredivisie to the Premier League represents a significant challenge for an 18-year-old, particularly when joining a club undergoing change. However, Newcastle already have experience of integrating young midfielders, with Lewis Miley having made his own breakthrough in recent seasons and local boy Elliot Anderson recently joining Manchester City for £116m following a short spell at Nottingham Forest.
Steur’s performances for Ajax suggested he possesses the confidence required to make the step up.
He is unlikely to be expected to start every week immediately, but his ability to take an opportunity when it arrives could make him an interesting player to follow throughout the campaign.
Oscar Mingueza – Crystal Palace

Age: 27
Position: Defender
Country: Spain
At 27, Oscar Mingueza arrives at Crystal Palace with considerably more senior experience than the other names featured, but his move to Selhurst Park could give him an opportunity to become one of the Premier League’s more notable new arrivals.
The defender joined Palace on a free transfer after his contract with Celta Vigo expired, having previously represented Spain at senior level.
Mingueza is particularly comfortable when moving the ball forward from defence and has the versatility to operate across the back line.
His arrival could become particularly significant if Daniel Munoz’s future at Palace remains uncertain. Should Munoz leave, Mingueza has the attributes to provide a ready-made option on the right side.
Even if Munoz stays, Mingueza’s ability to play in different defensive positions should give Palace plenty of flexibility.
The Spaniard garnered interest from all over Europe including the likes of AC Milan, Newcastle, Aston Villa and Borussia Dortmund but the Eagles manged to fend them off to get the full-back’s signature.
After impressing during his time in Spain, the Premier League will provide Mingueza with a fresh challenge, and his experience could make him one of the more intriguing additions to watch.
Brian Madjo – Aston Villa

Age: 17
Position: Striker
Country: England
Aston Villa supporters will already have had plenty of reasons to be excited about Brian Madjo following his performances in pre-season.
The 17-year-old striker has already made a significant impression since joining Villa in a deal worth just over £10m in January.
Born in London to Cameroonian parents and raised in Luxembourg, Madjo initially represented Luxembourg at senior international level before switching his allegiance to England and subsequently playing for the Under-17s.
Following a period in which his availability for competitive football was uncertain, Madjo was cleared to feature for Villa and made his competitive debut against Paris Saint-Germain in the Super Cup, scoring on his first appearance.
His pre-season form had already put him firmly on the radar. Madjo scored four times against Walsall, Real Sociedad and Indonesia All-Stars before finding the net against PSG.
Villa’s return to the Champions League could provide Madjo with opportunities across several competitions. With established options such as Ollie Watkins and Tammy Abraham ahead of him, there is also no need for the club to place the responsibility of leading the attack entirely on his shoulders.
That could create an ideal environment for his development, with Unai Emery able to introduce him gradually while still giving him opportunities to make an impact.
If his pre-season form is anything to go by, Madjo could become one of the Premier League’s most exciting young forwards to watch and even the country’s replacement for Harry Kane.
Trey Nyoni – Liverpool

Age: 19
Position: Centre-midfield
Country: England
Trey Nyoni has already had a taste of Premier League football, but the 2026/27 campaign could be the season when the young midfielder takes another significant step forward.
Nyoni joined Liverpool from Leicester City in 2023 and made his Premier League debut towards the end of last season after featuring in domestic cup competitions.
His performances were enough to earn the confidence of Arne Slot, who gave the midfielder a dozen appearances from the bench during the second half of the campaign.
Nyoni has also been one of Liverpool’s standout performers during pre-season, strengthening the case for a greater role within the first-team squad.
With competition for places in midfield and the demands of another long season ahead, Liverpool will have to decide whether Nyoni is ready to remain around the senior squad or benefit from regular football elsewhere.
His development so far suggests he is increasingly close to establishing himself as a first-team option, and another strong pre-season could give him an important platform heading into the new campaign.
Ryan McAidoo – Manchester City

Age: 18
Position: Winger
Country: England
Manchester City are no strangers to developing young talent, and Ryan McAidoo could be one of the academy graduates to attract attention this season.
The 18-year-old winger joined City from Chelsea’s academy and was part of the side that won the FA Youth Cup.
McAidoo impressed during City’s pre-season tour of the Far East, looking comfortable alongside the club’s senior players and demonstrating that he is capable of operating at a higher level.
His opportunities could increase further if Savinho departs the Etihad Stadium, potentially creating additional space in City’s attacking options.
The transition from academy football to regular Premier League involvement is never straightforward, but McAidoo’s pre-season performances have given him a strong foundation from which to build.
With a new-look City side continuing to evolve, the teenager could be one of the academy players given an opportunity to show what he can do.
