Williams Sisters Return to Wimbledon as Doubles Wildcard Confirmed
Tennis superstars Serena Williams and Venus Williams will return to Wimbledon together after they were handed a wildcard to compete in the women’s doubles.
Neither sister is included on the list of singles wildcards, although there is one remaining spot still to be given.
Serena, 44, made her comeback at Queen’s last week, four years after playing what many expected to be the final match of her career at the 2022 US Open.
The 23-time Grand Slam champion, which includes seven Wimbledon titles, will play in Berin this week alongside Karolina Muchova as part of her doubles comeback before reuniting with Venus at the All England Club.
Five-time Wimbledon champions Venus has struggled this season in singles competition, losing all seven of her appearances this season. Despite this, she was successful in a match alongside Katie Boulter at the Madrid Open in April.
Britain’s Dan Evans has not received a wildcard for this year’s men’s singles main draw in what would have been the former Britain’s No.1 final tournament.
Who else has received a wildcard?
Cameron Norrie, Jack Draper, Jan Choinski, Emma Raducanu, Katie Boulter and Francesca Jones are all ranked high enough to automatically qualify for the tournament.
Wildcards have been handed to four British men’s players, with two more spots to be confirmed.
The four players are Jacob Fearnley, Arthur Frey, Jack Pinnington and Toby Samuel.
Six of the wildcards in the women’s draw were given to British players.
Women’s singles wildcards:Â Maja Chwalinska, Harriet Dart, Alicia Dudeney, Hannah Klugman, Mika Stojsavljevic, Katie Swan, Mimi Xu
“Wildcards are usually offered on the basis of past performance at Wimbledon or to increase British interest,” the tournament said.
