Head Coach Gregor Townsend has enjoyed a positive 7-year spell with Scotland so far, and he has recently led them on a run of four consecutive Calcutta Cup victories against rivals England from 6^th February 2020 to 24^th February 2024. Scotland were 30 – 21 winners in their most recent competitive encounter in the 2023 Guinness Six Nations.

He was also in charge when Scotland collected their first win against England in ten years back in the 2018 Six Nations, where Townsend’s side were 25 – 13 winners.

We will now move on to Portugal, and the most emphatic win that Scotland has ever got over them was an 85 – 11 victory in a Rugby World Cup Qualifier in 1999, which involved a certain Gregor Townsend back in his playing days, and that day he did score 2 tries for his country. The other try scorers that day were Gordon Bulloch, John Leslie (2), Kenny Logan (2), Jamie Mayer (3), Cammie Murray, Eric Peters and Budge Pountney.

This is just one of just two previous encounters between these two European nations, the most recent of which came in a Pool Match at the 2007 Rugby World Cup where Scotland was emphatic winners once again, this time by a margin of 56 – 10. Rory Lamont (2), Dan Parks, Rob Dewey, Scott Lawson, Hugo Southwell, Kelly Brown and Ross Ford all scored tries that day, whilst it was Parks (5) and Chris Paterson (3) who scored Scotland’s 8 conversions between them.
