Scottish Gas Murrayfield Stadium History
History of Scottish Gas Murrayfield Stadium
Scottish Gas Murrayfield Stadium is Scotland’s national rugby venue and the home of the Scottish Rugby Union. Replacing Inverleith Park, it opened in April 1925 as Scotland’s largest purpose-built stadium. The original structure has undergone several major redevelopment projects, with the current stands being completed in 1983 and further significant refurbishments in 1995, which introduced modern facilities and the stadium’s first floodlight system. A running track was also added during this period. Murrayfield’s record attendance of 104,000 in 1975 remains one of the highest ever recorded for a rugby venue. Today, it remains an iconic sporting landmark and a central feature of Scotland’s sporting infrastructure.
