The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is set to host this event for the third time, previously hosting the Showdown in 2022 and 2023. History of the Saracens Showdown 4:
‘The Showdown 4’ is to be one of the most anticipated events in the rugby union calendar, and it is set to return to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for the third time on Saturday, 23rd March 2024. A rivalry is set to be renewed in North London when Saracens come face to face with Harlequins.
There is plenty of history that comes with the Showdown. It was not originally known as the Showdown, and the event’s history can be traced back to 2004, when Saracens would go on to play in London Double Headers at Twickenham.
It was in 2012 that ‘Derby Day’, an annual event, was established, and Harlequins would be Saracens’ regular opponent. Over the next few years, the event showed how popular it is amongst fans, breaking the world record for club rugby attendance on all three occasions. ‘Derby Day’ was moved to West Ham’s London Stadium in 2018 before Saracens announced a partnership with Spurs and the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in 2019, where the annual match was rebranded to ‘The Showdown’.
The inaugural ‘Showdown’, which saw Saracens face the Harlequins, took place at Allianz Park in front of an empty crowd due to the pandemic at the time. Saracens won the first Showdown by beating their rivals 38 – 24.
Bristol Bears were Saracens’ opposition in the Second Showdown on 26th March 2022. Again, Saracens were the winners, but it was a tighter contest this time. In front of a 49,376-strong crowd, Saracens emerged as 27 – 23 winners in the Capital.
It was on the 25th March 2023 that the most recent ‘Showdown’ took place. The crowd was even stronger this time – Saracens won 36 – 24 against Harlequins in front of 55,109 people. Alex Lozowski, Nick Tompkins, Andrew Christie, Sean Maitland and Maro Itoje scored the tries for Saracens. For Harlequins, Alex Dombrandt, Cadan Murley (2) and Joseph Marchant scored their tries.
