Manchester City then followed this triumph with further League Cup Final victories in 1976 (2 – 1 vs. Newcastle United), 2014 (3 – 1 vs. Sunderland), 2016 (3 – 1 on penalties vs. Liverpool), 2018 (3 – 0 vs. Arsenal), 2019 (4 – 3 on penalties vs. Chelsea), and 2020 (2 – 1 vs. Aston Villa).

The club’s most recent Carabao Cup Final triumph came just a year after victory against Villa, with Guardiola’s City taking on Tottenham in the 2021 Final at Wembley. It was a 1 – 0 win for the Cityzens, who won thanks to a winning goal from Spanish defender Aymeric Laporte late on in the second half (83’).

Now, we fast forward to the 2025/26 season, when Manchester City’s latest Carabao Cup campaign began with a Third Round tie against League One side Huddersfield Town, who are, of course, a former Premier League club. City were able to beat the Terriers comfortably 2 – 0 away from home following goals from the likes of Phil Foden (18’) and Savinho (74’).

This was followed by a fourth-round fixture against another former Premier League club, Swansea City, who now play in the Championship. This game took place in Wales, and it was a deserved 3 – 1 win for the Cityzens through Jeremy Doku (39’), Omar Marmoush (77’), and Rayan Cherki (90+4’) after initially going behind against the Jacks after Goncalo Franco gave the Welsh hosts the lead early in the first half (12’).

Then came the Quarter Final against current top-flight side Brentford, with this tie ending in a 2 – 0 City win at the Etihad Stadium, with the aforementioned Rayan Cherki (32’) and Savinho (67’) both on target with goals in what was a deserved win for the home side.

The semi-final followed, and it saw Manchester City go head-to-head with Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United side over two legs. The first leg took place up in the North East at Newcastle’s St. James’s Park, where the visiting City side were able to win 2 – 0 again, with the goals coming from January signing Antoine Semenyo (53’) and Rayan Cherki, who found the net deep into stoppage time in the second half (90+9’).

Then, in the second leg against the Magpies at the Etihad Stadium, the Cityzens were able to win 3 – 1 in Manchester. Omar Marmoush got a brace (7’, 29’), whilst midfielder Tijjani Reijnders (32’) also scored for City on the night, whilst the only goal for Newcastle came through Sweden international forward and former Manchester United player Anthony Elanga early in the second half (62’). City won 5 – 1 on aggregate.

Manchester City were victorious when they last met Arsenal in the Carabao Cup Final, back in 2018. Pep Guardiola’s Cityzens were able to secure a 3 – 0 win thanks to the goals of Sergio Agüero (18’), Vincent Kompany (58’), and David Silva (65’). This was against a Gunners side led by Arsène Wenger, with Mikel Arteta an assistant manager with Guardiola at City at the time.
