Aston Villa, who are currently led by their Spanish Head Coach Unai Emery, are going to go head to head with Vincenzo Italiano’s Bologna at the iconic and historic Villa Park in the league phase of the 2025/26 UEFA Europa League. Should Villa get all three points, this will create some fresh momentum going into the next few games of their European campaign.

The Villans will be looking to realise their ambitions to go and lift the Europa League title for the current season, and victory here would help them take a step closer to realising that. In the shorter term, it would also help the West Midlands club to go on to automatically qualify for the knockout rounds, which would, of course, come with a top eight finish.

Villa’s qualification for this season’s competition was sealed thanks to what was a 6th place finish in the English top flight after they had accumulated a total of 66 points from their 38 games in all in the Premier League. They only missed out on a second consecutive season of Champions League Football on goal difference alone.

Head Coach Unai Emery has famously had plenty of success in the Europa League, with him having won the competition as many as 4 times. Three of these came with Sevilla, with his side winning it in 2013/14 (4 – 2 on penalties vs. Benfica), 2014/15 (3 – 2 vs. Dnipro), and again in 2015/16 (3 – 1 vs. Liverpool). Emery also led Villarreal to European glory, winning this competition back in the 2020/21 campaign, when they were able to beat Manchester United 11 – 10 on penalty kicks after the game had ended level at 1 – 1, even after extra time.

As a club, Villa themselves have a strong European pedigree. They were, of course, European Champions in 1982 when a goal from Peter Withe (67’) was enough to beat German Giants Bayern Munich 1 – 0 at De Kuip in Rotterdam in the Netherlands.

Other European honours that the Villa have won also include the European Super Cup and the 2001 edition of the now-defunct Intertoto Cup. The former saw them beat the mighty FC Barcelona 3 – 1 on aggregate over two legs, with them winning the second leg 3 – 0 (after extra time) at Villa Park thanks to the goals of Gary Shaw (80’), Gordon Cowans (100’), and Ken McNaught (104’).

Moving on to Bologna, the furthest that they have ever made it into the Europa League is the Semi Finals, back when it was the UEFA Cup back in the 1998/99 season, when they were knocked out by French Club Marseille, losing on away goals after the two teams finished the tie level at 1 – 1.

The last time that these two clubs met was in the UEFA Champions League’s League Phase last season at Villa Park on Tuesday, 22nd October 2024, when goals from John McGinn and Jhon Duran (64’) midway through the second half secured a comfortable 2 – 0 victory for Villa against their opponents from Italy’s Serie A.
