Unai Emery’s Aston Villa are set to welcome a Bologna side who are currently led by their Italian Head Coach, Vincenzo Italiano, to Villa Park in what is the Second Leg of their UEFA Europa League quarter-final tie for the 2025/26 season. This tie in the heart of the Second City will be held in B6 on the evening of Thursday, 16th April 2026, with kick-off at 8pm.
The Villans are, of course, going to have their sights set on a spot in the Semi-Finals with victory over their Serie A opponents, which would provide momentum and take them a step closer to a place in the Final in Istanbul in May. Villa are among the favourites to go on and win this season’s competition, and with Emery in charge, fans and the squad know they most certainly have a great chance.
Unai Emery is the most successful manager in the history of the UEFA Europa League, having won it on a record 4 occasions, lifting the trophy during his spells in charge of Sevilla and Villarreal, both from his native Spain. Starting with the aforementioned Sevilla, he won this competition in three successive seasons in the 2013/14, 2014/15, and 2015/16 campaigns, beating the likes of Benfica (0 – 0 AET, 4 – 2 on penalties), FC Dnipro (3 – 2), and Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool (3 – 1), respectively.
With Villarreal, he led the Yellow Submarine to victory in the Europa League Final back in the 2020/21 season, beating Manchester United 11 – 10 on penalties after the game had ended in a 1 – 1 draw even after extra time, thanks to the goals of Gerard Moreno (29’) and Edinson Cavani (55’) for their respective clubs. It was Argentine Goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli who scored the winning penalty for Emery’s Villarreal in dramatic fashion.
Now that Aston Villa is in the 2025/26 UEFA Europa League, he hopes to extend his record by winning it for what would be an incredible 5th time. His Villans side, of course, began their journey in the tournament this term in the League Phase, with one of the victories coming against Bologna, who they beat 1 – 0 at Villa Park, thanks to a winning goal in the first half of this game in B6, thanks to a strike from Scotland international midfielder and club favourite John McGinn (13’).
Villa finished as high as 2nd place in the UEFA Europa League’s League Phase after earning a grand total of 21 points, only losing out on top spot on goal difference to French Giants Lyon.
Aston Villa won 7 games including that triumph over Bologna, with their other wins coming up against the likes of the Netherlands’ Feyenoord (2 – 0), Israel’s Maccabi Tel-Aviv (2 – 0), Switzerland’s BSC Young Boys and FC Basel, both being beaten 2 – 1 whilst also getting the better of Turkey’s Fenerbahce (1 – 0), and finally Austria’s RB Salzburg (3 – 2), with the winning goal being scored by Jamal Jimoh-Aloba in dramatic fashion late on in this game at which took place at Villa Park (87’). The other goals scored for Villa in that game came from the likes of Morgan Rogers (64’) and Tyrone Mings (76’).
Villa’s performances in the League Phase guaranteed that the second leg of every knockout tie up to the semi-finals is going to be played at Villa Park.
In the Round of 16, Unai Emery’s Aston Villa were drawn against Franc’s Lille, who they last faced in the UEFA Conference League Quarter Finals, dramatically beating them 4 – 3 on penalty kicks after ending up level at 3 – 3 on aggregate, even after extra time.
Now, in 2026, the first leg in France saw the Villa win 1 – 0 thanks to a great header from Ollie Watkins early in the second half (61’) to give themselves the advantage going into the second leg at Villa Park. Then, in B6, Villa were comfortable 2 – 0 winners thanks to goals from the likes of John McGinn (54’) and Leon Bailey (86’). The first goal of the night came from a spectacular ball from Emiliano Martinez, who found Jadon Sancho, who was then able to find club captain McGinn, who scored the goal to get some momentum going. It was a 3 – 0 win on aggregate in the end for Villa.
Now, Unai Emery’s Aston Villa are going to be taking on Italian Serie A side Bologna, led by Head Coach Vincenzo Italiano, over two legs in the Quarter Finals of this season’s UEFA Europa League competition, with the first leg taking place away from home at the Italian outfit’s Stadio Renato Dall’Ara.
This is before the second leg takes place at Villa Park on the evening of Thursday, 16th April 2026, with an 8pm kick-off in B6. Villa will hope to take advantage of this game against I Rossoblù (The Red and Blues) in Birmingham.
We are now moving on to Aston Villa’s Europa League Quarter Final opponents, Bologna, who, of course, began their journey in this season’s competition in the League Phase. Vincenzo Italiano and his side finished 10th with 15 points, winning 4, drawing 3, and losing just 1 of their 8 games.
Their wins came up against the likes of Romania’s Steaua Bucharest (2 – 1), Austria’s RB Salzburg (4 – 1), Spain’s Celta Vigo (2 – 1), and finally Israel’s Maccabi Tel-Aviv, who they were able to beat 3 – 0 away from home thanks to the goals of ex-Norwich City forward Jonathan Rowe (35’), as well as the likes of Riccardo Orsolini (47’), and Tomaso Pobega (90+4’).
They then had to play in the two-legged knock-out play-off round against Norwegian outfit Brann, winning the first leg 1 – 0 away from home thanks to a winning goal from their Argentinian centre forward Santiago Castro early on in the first half in what were the first ten minutes of this contest (9’).
Bologna then completed their 2 – 0 aggregate win over Brann thanks to another 1 – 0 win in the second leg, this time at home in Italy at the aforementioned Stadio Renato Dall’Ara. The winning goal on this occasion was scored by Portuguese right back Joao Mario (56’), following Brann’s going down to ten men after their 28-year-old midfielder Jacob Sørensen, who got sent off after being shown the red card late on in the first half of this game (37’).
They were then drawn against fellow Serie A side Roma in the Round of 16 after beating Brann. The first leg in Bologna ended in a 1–1 draw, with the goals coming from Federico Bernardeschi (50’) and Lorenzo Pellegrini (71’), who scored for hosts Bologna and visitors AS Roma, respectively.
The second leg was a game that could most certainly be described as a very dramatic rollercoaster contest, where both sides took the lead more than once, with Bologna eventually emerging as the 4–3 winners after extra time, making it 5–4 on aggregate in the end.
The second leg took place at the Stadio Olimpico in the Italian Capital City of Rome, with the goals for Italiano’s Bologna being scored by the likes of the aforementioned Rowe (22’), Bernardeschi (45+2’ – Penalty), and Castro (58’), as well as midfielder Nicolo Cambiaghi, who scored what turned out to be the winning goal for Bologna dramatically in extra time (111’).
Excitement and anticipation are already building ahead of this blockbuster second leg of this high profile 2025/26 UEFA Europa League tie in the Quarter Finals between Aston Villa and Bologna, with an electric atmosphere to boot at Villa Park in B6. Book now to avoid disappointment.
