It will be a historic moment at Goodison Park when Everton meet Luton Town in a top flight fixture for the first time in more than 30 years in the 2023/24 Premier League season. Toffees boss Sean Dyche will have set his side a target of avoiding relegation more comfortably this time and look to climb the table. Meanwhile, Rob Edwards will look to lead his Hatters team to safety in their first ever Premier League season.
Sean Dyche has been the manager of Everton since January 2023, when he became Frank Lampard’s permanent successor at Goodison Park. When Dyche joined the club, the Toffees had only accumulated 15 points, and they sat in 19th place and in the relegation zone. Dyche had masterfully kept Burnley in the league for several years. He led the Clarets to qualification for the Europa League after a 7th place finish in the Premier League (2018/19).
So he was the ideal candidate to secure Everton’s status in the league and make progress. The latter objective was achieved, with wins against Arsenal (1-0) and Brighton (5-1) being secured along the way to their pivotal 1-0 victory against Bournemouth at Goodison Park, which secured their spot in the Premier League for the 2023/24 season.
With seven goals, Dwight McNeil was the Toffees’ leading scorer in the Premier League in the 2022/23 season, with Abdoulaye Doucouré and Demarai Gray scoring 5 and 4 goals, respectively.
In November 2022, Rob Edwards, who had just been dismissed by rivals Watford, joined Luton Town as their new Head Coach following the departure of Nathan Jones for Southampton. Edwards took the Hatters to the next level, leading them to a 3rd place finish in the Championship with 80 points, where they entered the Promotion Play-Offs.
After victory was secured over two legs against Sunderland (3-2) in the semi-finals, Luton Town secured promotion to the Premier League for the first time when they beat Coventry City 6-5 on penalties after the game had finished 1-1 after extra time.
With 20 goals in the Championship, Carlton Morris was the leading league goal scorer for the Hatters last term, with Elijah Adebayo coming 2nd in the club’s scoring charts with ten goals. As for Morris, only Coventry City’s Viktor Gyökeres (21) and Middlesbrough’s Chuba Akpom (28) scored more goals in the Championship.
Everton and Luton Town played against each other in a competitive fixture for the first time in an FA Cup Quarter Final tie on 3rd March 1933 at Goodison Park, where the home team won 6-0. Jimmy Stein (20’, 85’), Thomas Johnson (37’, 70’), James Dunn (47’) and the great Dixie Dean (79’) scored the goals for the Toffees that day. Everton went on to win their second of 5 FA Cups to date in the 1932/33 season.
The Toffees and the Hatters have met 47 times over the years, with Everton having the best record of 23 wins compared to Luton Town’s 15. There have been nine draws between these clubs.
The last time that these two teams played against each other was in a League Cup 4th Round tie at Kenilworth Road, where Everton was able to get the better of Luton Town thanks to a Tim Cahill goal in extra time (101’).
