Everton, led by their Scottish Head Coach David Moyes, will be going head to head with Regis Le Bris’ newly promoted Sunderland side in what is a crucial game for both sides. The two teams will face each other at the all-new Hill Dickinson Stadium in the heart of Merseyside during the 2025/26 Premier League season.
A victory in this game would be significant for the Toffees, as they would be taking a step closer to realising their ambitions for the season, which are to finish in a very respectable mid table position in the league, whilst also looking to potentially finish even higher and end up in the top half of the table by the season’s end this term.
The current Head Coach of Everton Football Club is, of course, David Moyes, who is currently enjoying what is his second spell in charge of the club. He arrived back in January 2025, which was 12 years after he had originally left the club in 2013 – this was when he had accepted an offer to take over from fellow Scot and the legendary manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, at Manchester United.
Throughout his first tenure at the club, Moyes had several great players wear the famous blue of Everton under his stewardship. This included the likes of Tim Cahill, Wayne Rooney, David Unsworth, Thomas Gravesen, Tim Howard, Yakubu, Steven Pienaar, Phil Jagielka, and Leighton Baines, as well as many more.
During his time away from the club, David Moyes managed the likes of Manchester United, Real Sociedad, Sunderland, and West Ham United twice. Facing one of his former clubs, Sunderland will make this game even more intriguing. With West Ham, he won the 2023 UEFA Conference League title after beating Italian Serie A side Fiorentina 2 – 1 thanks to goals from the likes of Said Benrahma (62’) and Jarrod Bowen (90’), with the former scoring his goal from the penalty spot. It was Italian central midfielder Giacomo Bonaventura who ended up scoring the only goal of the game for La Viola, which came as an equaliser just moments after Benrahma’s opening goal midway through the second half (67’).
The official confirmation of David Moyes’ appointment as Everton boss for the second time took place back on Saturday, 11th January 2025, which saw him succeed Sean Dyche as Head Coach of the Toffees.
His first few months back at the club saw him lead his team away from the relegation zone and up to a very respectable 13th place finish, with a total of 48 points to their name following the conclusion of the 38th and final game of last season. In the end, there was a gap of as many as 23 points between them and the relegation zone.
Moving on to Sunderland, their French Head Coach, Regis Le Bris, has been in charge since he was officially confirmed as the successor to previous boss Michael Beale at the Stadium of Light on 22nd June 2024.
The 2024/25 EFL Championship campaign was his first full season in charge of the Black Cats, and he of course led them to promotion. This came following a 2 – 1 win in the highly prestigious 2025 EFL Championship Play-Off Final at the iconic Wembley Stadium against Sheffield United, where Sunderland’s goals came from the likes of Eliezer Mayenda (76’) and Tom Watson (90+5’) in what was late drama following Tyrese Campbell’s goal to give Sheffield United an initial lead in the first half (25’).
This sealed Sunderland’s long awaited return to the Premier League, with the Black Cats having been away from the English Top Flight for 8 years following relegation back in 2017.
The last time that these two clubs met in the Premier League was back on 25th February 2017 at Goodison Park, which saw Everton win comfortably 2 – 0 in Merseyside thanks to goals from the likes of Idrissa Gueye (40’) and Romelu Lukaku (80’).
They then met again in the Third Round of the League Cup at the start of the 2017/18 season, in what is their latest competitive encounter in all competitions. This game was also at Goodison Park, and on this occasion, it was to be an even more comfortable 3 – 0 win in what was an emphatic win for the Toffees. This time, it was Dominic Calvert-Lewin (38’, 51’) and Oumar Niasse (83’) who were the scorers of the three goals on that day.
Overall, Everton and Sunderland have met competitively in all competitions on at least 184 occasions, and it is the Toffees who currently hold the superior record, with 83 victories to date, while the Black Cats have achieved 71 wins. And, to date, there have been 30 draws between these two teams as of the time of writing.
