Liverpool will be playing Brighton at Anfield once again in the 2023/24 Premier League season, with both clubs hoping to continue the momentum from their excellent respective runs of form towards the end of last season. The Reds will have their sights set on a return to the Champions League and will look to enter the title race. The Seagulls were one of last term’s surprise packages and will look to secure European football once again.
An incredible run of form in the final weeks of the season lifted Liverpool into the top six, where they eventually managed to finish in 5th place with 67 points – just 4 adrift of Newcastle United in 4th place. Whilst having the joint 4th best defence, conceding 47 goals, the Reds were as dangerous as ever going forward, scoring 75 goals in 38 Premier League matches.
Only two teams scored more goals than Jürgen Klopp’s Reds in the entirety of last season, and they were Arsenal with 88 and Champions Manchester City, who were the top-scoring side with a total of 94 goals.
Mohamed Salah led the way in Liverpool’s goal-scoring charts last season with 19, with fellow forward Roberto Firmino coming 2nd with 11. Darwin Núñez and Cody Gakpo got 9 and 7 goals, respectively.
Jürgen Klopp became Liverpool’s Manager all the way back in October 2015 when he replaced Brendan Rodgers. The German Head Coach has since become a legendary figure at the club, winning a plethora of silverware in his 8 years with the club to date. So far, he has led Liverpool to: 1 Premier League title (2019/20), 1 FA Cup (2021/22), 1 EFL Cup (2021/22), 1 Community Shield (2022), 1 UEFA Champions League title (2018/19), UEFA Super Cup (2019) and 1 FIFA Club World Cup (2019).
Brighton has been on an upward trajectory for some years now and have continued to do so under their Italian Head Coach, Roberto De Zerbi, who was appointed in September 2022. De Zerbi built on the foundations left by Potter, and he managed to lead the Seagulls on a superb Premier League campaign, eventually finishing as high as 6th with 62 points, securing them European football for the first time in their 120+ year history.
The top goal scorer last season for the Seagulls was Alexis Mac Allister (who signed for Liverpool in the summer) with 10 goals. Pascal Gross was second in the Brighton scoring charts with 9, whilst Solly March, Kaoru Mitoma and Leandro Trossard (now at Arsenal) all got 7 goals each.
Liverpool and Brighton first met on 1st February 1908 in an FA Cup 2nd round tie at Anfield. They drew 1-1, but the Reds did win the replay 3-0. Overall, the two clubs have played against each other on 38 occasions with the Reds having a superior record of 20 wins in comparison to the Seagulls’ 7. There have been 11 draws between them to date.
The most recent match that was played between these two clubs came on 29th January 2023 in an FA Cup 4th Round tie at the AMEX Stadium. Brighton won 2-1 against the Reds on the day.
