Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool take on Premier League and European Champions Manchester City at Anfield in the 2023/24 Premier League season. Both clubs have their sights set on challenging for the Premier League title yet again, and the two teams have gone head to head several times in the last few seasons for the league title, and they will look to do so once again this term.
In the 2021/22 season, Liverpool lost out on the title to Pep Guardiola’s side by just a point behind City’s total of 93 points. The Reds were unlucky that year as getting more than 90 points usually guarantees you the title. The Anfield club were even more unlucky a few seasons before in 2018/19 when Liverpool once again lost out by a point, but the Reds had amassed 97 points and were unlucky that City managed to get 98 points on the board.
Liverpool did get the better of Manchester City in the 2019/20 Premier League season when the Reds won their first ever Premier League title after accumulating 99 points, an emphatic 18 points ahead of the Cityzens, who settled for 2nd that season with a total of 81.
Fast forward to the 2022/23 season and Liverpool’s significant run of form from February to the end of the season saw them win 10 of their final 15 matches whilst also losing just 2 of them, drawing on 3 occasions. This tremendous run of form saw Liverpool end up finishing in 5th place with 67 points with a gap of just 4 points separating them and a spot in the top four. The Reds were at least able to secure Europa League football for this season.
Top scorer Mohamed Salah scored 19 of Liverpool’s 75 total goals this season, which was the 3rd best record in the league. Only Arsenal (88) and Manchester City (94) found the back of the net on more occasions than Jürgen Klopp’s team. On an individual basis, Roberto Firmino was second in Liverpool’s goal scoring charts with 10, followed by Darwin Núñez, who got 9 goals with Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota scoring 7 goals each.
Jürgen Klopp was appointed as Liverpool’s Head Coach following the departure of Brendan Rodgers in October 2015. During his almost 10 year stint at the club, the German has led the Anfield club to a plethora of trophies: 1 Premier League title (2019/20), 1 FA Cup (2021/22), 1 EFL Cup (2021/22), 1 Community Shield (2022), 1 UEFA Champions League title (2018/19), UEFA Super Cup (2019) and 1 FIFA Club World Cup (2019).
Klopp was also awarded the freedom of the city of Liverpool in recognition of his success at the club on 2nd November 2022.
Pep Guardiola has also had great success since joining Manchester City on 1st February 2016 when he succeeded Manuel Pellegrini as the club’s Head Coach. During his time with the Cityzens, the Spaniard has won a number of major honours: 5 Premier League titles (2017/18, 2018/19, 2020/21, 2021/22 and 2022/23), 2 FA Cups (2018/19 & 2022/23), 4 EFL Cups (2017/18, 2018/19, 2019/20 & 2020/21), 2 Community Shields (2018 & 2019) and the UEFA Champions League in the 2022/23 season.
Erling Haaland was Manchester City’s leading Premier League goal scorer last season with a total of 36 goals to his name. Phil Foden and World Cup winner Julián Álvarez came 2nd and 3rd with 11 and 9 goals respectively.
Liverpool and Manchester City first met in a league match on 16th September 1893 where the Reds won 1-0. Overall, the two teams have met on 224 occasions over the years and it is Liverpool with the superior record of 108 wins compared to City’s 60. There have been 56 draws at the time of writing.
The most recent match to take place between these two Premier League giants was in the Premier League at the Etihad Stadium, where Manchester City beat Liverpool 4-1.
