Liverpool and Nottingham Forest are set to face each other in the Premier League once again at Anfield in the 2023/24 season. The Reds have their sights set on the top four and the title race whilst Forest will want to finish the season with more points separating themselves and the relegation zone.
Both clubs have won the Champions League/European Cup on more than one occasion. Nottingham Forest won it in 2 consecutive seasons, coming in 1978/79 (vs. Malmö) and 1979/80 (vs. Hamburg) under the management of the legendary Brian Clough. Meanwhile, Liverpool have won the trophy on 6 occasions in 1976/77 (vs. Borussia Mönchengladbach), 1977/78 (vs. Club Brugge), 1980/81 (vs. Real Madrid), 1983/84 (vs. AS Roma), 2004/05 (vs. AC Milan) & 2018/19 (vs. Spurs).
These triumphs were under the management of Bob Paisley, Joe Fagan, Rafael Benítez and Jürgen Klopp.
Klopp took over from Brendan Rodgers as Liverpool’s Head Coach in October 2015 and has gone on to hold a legendary status with Reds fans as a result of the plethora of major trophies that the German club has won in his almost decade long tenure at the club. At the time of writing, Klopp has won more than more than a dozen trophies for Liverpool: 1 Premier League title (2019/20), 1 FA Cup (2021/22), 1 EFL Cup (2021/22), 1 Community Shield (2022), 1 UEFA Champions League title (2018/19), UEFA Super Cup (2019) and 1 FIFA Club World Cup (2019).
The 2022/23 season was a rollercoaster one for Klopp, whose side picked up 10 wins from their last 15 Premier League matches to finish in 5th place with 67 points – just 4 adrift of Newcastle United in a Champions League spot.
Liverpool scored 75 goals in all in the league last season, with just the top two (Arsenal and Manchester City) getting more goals with 88 and 94 respectively. Mohamed Salah scored 19 of these goals for the Reds, and was the club’s top scorer last term with Brazilian forward Roberto Firmino a close second with 11 to his name.
Steve Cooper took charge of Nottingham Forest on 21st September 2021 with the club bottom of the Championship table. Cooper was able to turn the club’s fortunes around and they went on to earn a return to the Premier League for the first time in more than 20 years after beating Huddersfield Town 1-0 in the Championship Play-Off Final at Wembley. Forest finished 4th with 80 points ahead of the play-offs.
Taiwo Awoniyi, one of Forest’s more than 20 summer signings, was the top goal scorer for the club in the Premier League with 10 goals to his name. The Nigerian forward was closely followed by Brennan Johnson with 8 goals. Morgan Gibbs-White and Danilo also got 5 and 3 goals respectively.
Liverpool faced Nottingham Forest for the very first time in January 1895 in what was a 5-0 league win for the Reds at Anfield. Overall, the two clubs have met on 118 occasions over the years. It is Liverpool with the superior record of 58 wins in comparison to Forest’s 31. There have been 29 draws between these two clubs at the time of writing.
The most recent match between these two teams was on 22nd April 2023 at Anfield, where Liverpool secured a 3-2 Premier League win. Diogo Jota (47’, 55’) and Mohamed Salah (70’) were on the scoresheet on the Reds that day. Neco Williams (51’) and Morgan Gibbs-White (67’) scored for Steve Cooper’s side.
