Liverpool head into the 2026/27 season with ambitions of winning their seventh UEFA Champions League and their second Premier League after a summer of change.
The Reds are set for an exciting year with a new era beckoning at Anfield following the appointment of Andoni Iraola as Head Coach. Following the departures of Mohamed Salah, Andrew Robertson, and former manager Arne Slot, Liverpool are expected to bring some exciting and young players to Merseyside to help them push for silverware.
Andoni Iraola arrives at Anfield with a reputation as one of the brightest coaches in European football. The Spaniard has taken a relatively unconventional route to the top, building his career step by step rather than moving straight into one of the continent’s biggest jobs.
After short spells with AEK Larnaca in Cyprus and Spanish side Mirandés, where he guided the club to a remarkable Copa del Rey semi-final, Iraola really began to attract attention at Rayo Vallecano. There, he won promotion to La Liga in his first season and established Rayo as one of Spain’s most entertaining and competitive teams, regularly punching above their weight against clubs with far greater resources.
His success in Spain earned him a move to Bournemouth in 2023. Although his side failed to win any of their opening nine Premier League matches, Bournemouth’s hierarchy remained patient and were rewarded for their faith.
In his first season, he guided the club to a record Premier League points tally, and over the following years continued to raise standards, helping Bournemouth achieve the best results in their history and establish themselves as a genuine force in the division.
The Reds finished 5th in last year’s Premier League, qualifying for the UEFA Champions League under Dutchman Arne Slot.
Liverpool have one of the most exciting strike forces in Europe, with record Premier League signing Alexander Isak set to partner Hugo Ekitike throughout the campaign, supported by the likes of Florian Wirtz and set-piece specialist Dominik Szoboszlai.
The former Premier League champions will be aiming to reclaim the League in the 2026/27 season and also look to add another Champions League trophy to their huge trophy cabinet at Anfield.
Nottingham Forest endured a far more difficult campaign this season than the one before. After qualifying for Europe and finishing seventh in 2024–25, expectations were high, but Forest struggled to balance domestic and European commitments.
Their Premier League form was inconsistent throughout the year, and a series of poor results left them fighting near the bottom half of the table rather than pushing for another European place. They eventually finished 16th, avoiding relegation but falling well short of supporters’ hopes.
One of the defining features of the season was instability in the dugout. Nuno EspÃrito Santo was dismissed in September, Ange Postecoglou lasted only 39 days, Sean Dyche followed but was also sacked, and VÃtor Pereira became the club’s fourth manager of the campaign. The constant changes made it difficult for Forest to build momentum or establish a clear identity on the pitch.
Despite their league struggles, there were positives. Forest reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa League, giving fans memorable European nights and showing the squad could compete at a higher level. Morgan Gibbs-White remained one of the team’s standout performers, finishing as a leading scorer and creative force. In the end, the season was viewed as a disappointment domestically but was partly redeemed by an impressive European run that provided hope for the future.
Overall, Liverpool and Nottingham Forest have met in a competitive fixture 124 times, and it is the hosts who have a superior record of 61 wins compared with the Tricky Trees’ record of 33 to date. There has also been a total of 30 draws between these two teams as well.
