Manchester United, who are currently led by their Portuguese Head Coach Ruben Amorim, are set to welcome Regis Le Bris’ Sunderland side to the iconic and historic Old Trafford that is located in the heart of the City of Manchester during the 2025/26 Premier League season.
If United are able to get the better of the Black Cats, then they will create some fresh momentum and optimism going into the next few games of the campaign, and it would also take them a step closer to realising their ambitions for this season, which are to seal a return to European Football by securing a top seven finish.
Ruben Amorim is, of course the current Head Coach of Manchester United Football Club, with him having been in charge ever since his tenure with the Red Devils began officially back on Monday 11th November 2024. The Portuguese replaced his predecessor Erik Ten Hag in the Old Trafford hot seat, with his appointment having originally been confirmed a few weeks earlier on Friday 1st November 2024.
The first full season under Amorim was of course the 2024/25 campaign. Starting with the Premier League, United were able to get 42 points from their 38 games in total in the English Top Flight which meant that they ended up with a 15th place finish in the end. They did end the campaign on a high though, when they were able to defeat Unai Emery’s Aston Villa 2 – 0 at Old Trafford on the final day.
Moving on to Sunderland, their French Head Coach Regis Le Bris has been in charge of the club ever since he officially joined the Black Cats back on Saturday 22nd June 2024, with his tenure then starting a short time after that on Monday 1st July 2024.
In the 2024/25, his first full season, Le Bris led his side all the way to promotion from the EFL Championship. The North East based side ended up in 3rd place in the English Second Tier after 46 matches before going on to secure a Premier League return for the first time in almost a decade when they were able to beat Sheffield United 2 – 1 in the 2025 EFL Championship Play-Off Final at the iconic Wembley Stadium. Eliezer Mayenda (76’) and Tom Watson (90+5’) were the scorers for Sunderland, whilst the only goal for the Blades came from their striker Tyrese Campbell (25’), who initially gave his side the early lead.
The last time that these two clubs came face to face competitively in all competitions was in the Premier League back on Sunday 9th April 2017 at the Stadium Of Light, where Manchester United were comfortable and ruthless 3 – 0 winners. The goals for them came from the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimović (30’), Henrikh Mkhitaryan (46’), and Marcus Rashford (89’).
Overall, Manchester United and Sunderland have met competitively in all competitions on no less than on 145 occasions, and it is United who do have the superior record in this fixture of as many as 65 victories, whilst the Black Cats have 42 wins so far against the Red Devils. There have also been 38 draws between these two clubs to date, as of the time of writing.
