Manchester United v Newcastle United – Premier League 2026/27

Manchester United enter the 2026/27 season looking to build on their third-place Premier League finish and return to the latter stages of the UEFA Champions League under permanent Head Coach Michael Carrick.

Carrick made an impressive impact after initially taking charge on an interim basis, winning 12 of his first 17 matches as United finished the previous campaign with 71 points and secured Champions League qualification.

Bruno Fernandes remains one of United’s key attacking influences after another outstanding creative season, supported by the likes of Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha. Goalkeeper Senne Lammens also impressed, recording eight clean sheets in 32 appearances.

Newcastle United arrive at the 2026/27 season looking to respond after a challenging previous campaign. Having qualified for the Champions League and lifted the Carabao Cup in 2024/25, the Magpies were unable to maintain that momentum, finishing 12th in the Premier League before exiting the Champions League against Barcelona.

Bruno Guimarães remained an influential figure for Newcastle alongside players including Lewis Hall and William Osula, but the summer brought significant change at St James’ Park. Anthony Gordon departed for

Barcelona, while Kieran Trippier and Sandro Tonali were also among the players to leave the club.

There was also change in the dugout, with Matthias Jaissle replacing Eddie Howe after the Englishman’s four-and-a-half-year spell in charge. Jaissle will now be looking to guide Newcastle back towards the Premier League’s European qualification places.

Overall, these two clubs have gone head to head in a competitive fixture in all competitions on a total of 183 occasions, and it is the hosts who have the superior record of 93 victories compared with the visitors’ record of 49 overall. The Magpies have drawn with Man United on 41 occasions to date.
