One of the most iconic and long standing rivalries in world football is set to take place when Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United take on reigning Champions Liverpool, who are led by their Dutch Head Coach Arne Slot. This game is set to take place in the heart of the City of Manchester at the historic Old Trafford during the 2025/26 Premier League season.
If United do emerge victorious against their fierce rivals Liverpool in this game, then it would be a statement triumph for the club whilst also taking them a step closer to realising their ambitions for this season, which is to seal a return to European Football via a top seven finish in the league after all 38 games have been played. A win also creates some fresh momentum going into their next games in all competitions.
Ruben Amorim is, of course, the current Head Coach of Manchester United Football Club, and he has been in charge since his tenure at United began back on Monday 11th November 2024. This came just over a week after confirmation of his appointment on Friday 1st November 2024, with him succeeding Erik Ten Hag. The 2025/26 campaign is his first full season in charge.
He took over the Red Devils at around the midway point of last season (2024/25), and once all 38 games had been played, his side had to settle for what was a 15th place finish in the English Top Flight after they had earned a total of 42 points across all of their games in the league. They did finish the season on a high, though, as they did indeed manage to beat Aston Villa led by Unai Emery 2 – 0, thanks to goals from the likes of Amad Diallo (76’) and Christian Eriksen (87’), with the latter finding the back of the net via the penalty spot.
Moving on to Liverpool, their Dutch Head Coach Arne Slot has been in charge ever since his tenure began back on Saturday 1st June 2024. The announcement of his arrival that saw him named as Jurgen Klopp’s successor at the Merseyside Club was a few weeks before that on Tuesday 20th May 2025.
The 2024/25 season was his first full season in charge, and it saw Slot’s side secure the Premier League title after they were able to accumulate a total of no less than 84 points from their 38 matches, which saw them go level with Manchester United on 20 top flight league titles. They ended up finishing as many as 10 points clear of runners-up Arsenal, led by Mikel Arteta, in second place.
The last time that these two clubs met face to face in a competitive fixture in all competitions was in the Premier League on Sunday 5th January 2025 at Anfield, and in the end, it was to be a 2 – 2 draw between these two fierce rivals. The visiting United side scored their goals through the likes of Lisandro Martinez (52’) and Amad Diallo (80’), whilst it was Cody Gakpo (59’) and Mohamed Salah (70’) who were on target for the Reds, with the latter scoring from the penalty spot.
Overall, Manchester United and Liverpool have met competitively in all competitions on no less than 244 occasions, and it is United who so far have the superior record in this fixture, with as many as 91 victories. Meanwhile, the Reds have 82 wins to date against the Red Devils. There have also been 71 draws to date between these two teams.
