For the first time in more than 30 years, Manchester United and Luton Town will play against each other in a top-flight match at Old Trafford in the 2023/24 Premier League season. Erik Ten Hag’s Red Devils will look to be in title contention as well as having the goal of securing Champions League football once again. As for Rob Edwards’ Hatters, they will be looking to fight against relegation in their first-ever Premier League campaign with the goal of securing a second straight top-flight campaign.
Erik Ten Hag’s reputation has been on the rise in recent years, and following spells with Go Ahead Eagles (2012 – 2013), Bayern Munich II (2013 – 2015) and Utrecht (2015 – 2017), he joined Ajax in 2017. In the 6 years that he spent with the Dutch Giants, he won 6 trophies: 3 Eredivisie titles (2018/19, 2020/21 & 2021/22), 2 KNVB Cups (2018/19 & 2020/21) and the Johan Cruyff Shield in 2019.
The Dutch Head Coach also led the club to victories in the Champions League against Real Madrid (4-1) and Juventus (2-1) to get to the 2019 Champions League Semi-Final, where they were unlucky to lose to Spurs on away goals following a 3-3 draw over the two legs.
Then, following the conclusion of Ralf Rangnick’s time as Manchester United’s interim Head Coach, Erik Ten Hag was finally named as Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s permanent successor on 21st April 2022. The 2022/23 campaign was his first full season in charge, and with it brought progress for the Red Devils.
Following a disappointing 2021/22 campaign where they finished in 6th place with 58 points, Ten Hag was able to lead a turnaround in Manchester United’s fortunes, ending up in 3rd place by the end of the 2022/23 Premier League season with 75 points to their name. This was an improvement of 3 places and 17 points compared to the season before.
Manchester City and Newcastle conceded the joint least amount of goals last season with 33. Manchester United, together with Arsenal, came joint second after conceding only 43 goals in 38 games.
Marcus Rashford was the Red Devils’ leading Premier League goal scorer with 17 goals, followed by Portugal international midfielder Bruno Fernandes. Anthony Martial and Jadon Sancho got 6 goals each.
Following Nathan Jones’ departure for Southampton on 10th November 2022, Rob Edwards took over shortly after being dismissed by Luton Town’s rivals Watford. Edwards took charge of the Hatters as their Head Coach the same month as Jones’ departure, and he was able to lead Luton to a 3rd place finish in the Championship last season, accumulating 80 points. After victory over two legs against Sunderland in the Championship Play-Off Semi-Finals, the Hatters went on to beat Coventry City 6-5 on penalties in the final at Wembley after the match ended 1 – 1 after extra time.
Carlton Morris scored 20 goals in the Championship, making him Luton Town’s leading goal scorer. Only Coventry City’s Viktor Gyökeres (21) and Middlesbrough’s Chuba Akpom (28) scored more goals in England’s second tier. Elijah Adebayo was second in the Hatters’ goal-scoring charts with 10.
Manchester United and Luton Town met for their first-ever competitive match on 18th September 1897. The Red Devils have gone on to win 29 of their 40 meetings to date, whereas the Hatters have 4 wins against their Manchester counterparts as of the time of writing. There have been 7 draws between these two clubs.
The most recent occasion in which these two teams played against each other was on 22nd September 2020 in what was the 3rd round of the League Cup at Kenilworth Road. Manchester United won the match comfortably, beating Luton Town 3-0 courtesy of goals from Juan Mata (44’ – penalty), Marcus Rashford (88’) and Mason Greenwood (90+2’).
