Andrew Balding Targets York Ebor Festival With Star-Studded Team

Andrew Balding is preparing a strong squad for next week’s Sky Bet Ebor Festival, with the Kingsclere trainer set to target some of the biggest races across four days of action at York Racecourse.

Balding could be represented in three of the four Group 1 contests during the meeting, alongside a host of potential runners in some of York’s most competitive handicaps.

The trainer is looking forward to another major week on the Knavesmire.

“It’s a very big meeting. We always look forward to it. We’re strong, particularly in a couple of the bigger races, which is always nice and we’ll have plenty of runners in the handicaps as well.”

Item Takes Aim at £1.5m Juddmonte International

The action gets underway on Wednesday, August 19, with Item set to take on a formidable field in the richest-ever renewal of the Juddmonte International.

The £1.5 million Group 1 could see Balding’s Frankel colt face leading contenders Ombudsman and Constitution River in one of the standout races of the week.

Item already has an impressive record at York, having won the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante Stakes over the course and distance before returning last month to land the Sky Bet York Stakes.

Balding has always held the three-year-old in high regard and believes he deserves his chance against the very best.

“He’s a horse we’ve always had huge belief in. Bar Epsom, Derby Day, on which the ground was not to his liking, he’s got a flawless record. He’s won his other four starts and was quite impressive last time at York, given that the race probably wasn’t run ideally to suit him.

“But we’re there with the best older horse in Europe and probably the best three-year-old in Europe. It’s no easy task. But it would be great to go there and see how he can pitch in against those two.”

Kalpana Set for Yorkshire Oaks

Balding could also have a leading contender in Thursday’s Legends Global Yorkshire Oaks, with King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner Kalpana being prepared for the Group 1 contest.

The mare produced a superb performance at Ascot on July 25 and has reportedly come out of that victory in excellent shape.

Balding said: “I’m very pleased with how she’s moving and how her appetite’s been since Ascot, etc.

“She’s got a big piece of work to do prior to confirming that we’re going to York. But as long as that goes well, we’re really looking forward to it.”

Flora Of Bermuda Targets City of York Stakes

Flora Of Bermuda is another potential highlight of Balding’s team and is on course for Saturday’s Sky Bet City of York Stakes.

A two-time winner at York, including in the William Hill Summer Stakes, the mare could return to the Knavesmire looking to add another victory to her impressive course record.

Balding has enjoyed plenty of success in the City of York Stakes, winning the race five times, including last year with Never So Brave.

Flora Of Bermuda appears the most likely of his contenders to take her chance this time around.

“I think the one that would certainly go would be Flora Of Bermuda, who seems to be effective on any ground. She won the Oak Tree (Glorious Goodwood) well, showing that she stays seven furlongs. She’s won twice at York before over six – it looks the perfect spot for her, really. She’s not won a Group 1 yet, but she’s been placed in a couple.

“Marvelman, I think he’s a very smart horse but he’s better with give in the ground. His participation would depend on the going.

“Never So Brave, he’s been left in the Hungerford (Newbury, 15 August) – we’ll have that as an option as well. I feel he’s just coming back to where he was this time last year. I thought he ran well in the Sussex Stakes.”

More Balding Runners Could Head to York

Balding has several other potential runners among his older horses, with Galiyan entered for the Sky Bet Great Voltigeur and Prizeland among the entries for the Listed British EBF and Sir Henry Cecil Galtres Stakes.

His juvenile team could also provide another contender, with Moonrise being prepared for Thursday’s Sky Bet Lowther Stakes.

The filly won a six-furlong Group 3 at Ascot last month and is now set to step up into Group 2 company at York.

Balding is confident the track should suit her style of racing.

“We felt York would suit her really well because she’s a strong traveller and that’s a good speed, the York six (furlongs). I’m looking forward to seeing her up in grade.”

Tarriance Leads Ebor Hopes

The Sky Bet Ebor provides the headline handicap on Saturday and Balding could have multiple chances in the £500,000 contest.

Tarriance, Further and Fantasy World are all entered, although Tarriance looks to have emerged as the leading contender.

The seven-year-old landed last year’s Sky Bet Melrose Handicap over the same distance and arrives at York after finishing fourth in a competitive stayers’ handicap at the Qatar Goodwood Festival.

Balding was delighted with the run and believes the horse has been specifically prepared with the Ebor in mind.

“I thought he ran an excellent race last time. He’d been off the track for a bit because we were saving him for the Ebor. That was very much an intended break. We got him up early to go to Saudi in the winter and he then ran well in the Yorkshire Cup, I thought.

“We decided after that – having won the Melrose last year – that this was his primary target and couldn’t have been happier with his prep run or how he’s come out of it.”
