Arc Performances Set Up Blockbuster Qatar Racing British Champions Day
British Champions Day is now less than two weeks away, and a dramatic weekend at ParisLongchamp has added several new storylines ahead of the Flat season finale at Ascot Racecourse.
Daryz produced the headline performance in France by winning the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe for the second successive year, becoming the first colt since Alleged in 1978 to retain the race. However, some of the most significant consequences for Ascot came from the horses immediately behind him and elsewhere across the Arc Weekend card.
With British Champions Day taking place on Saturday 17th October, several of the leading contenders now face a quick turnaround as the fields for Ascot’s major races begin to take shape.
Bay City Roller Emerges as Major Champion Stakes Contender
Bay City Roller produced one of the performances of the weekend when finishing second behind Daryz in the Arc.
George Scott’s four-year-old briefly looked capable of causing an upset before Daryz swept past in the closing stages, with Bay City Roller holding second ahead of Diamond Necklace. His effort has now established him as a serious contender for the Qatar Racing Champion Stakes.
Scott confirmed after the race that Ascot is next on the agenda, saying: “We’ll go for the Champion Stakes now and hope we get a little bit of rain.”
Bay City Roller has subsequently shortened considerably in the Champion Stakes market and could join a high-quality field which includes last year’s first three, Calandagan, Ombudsman and Almaqam.
That gives the Ascot contest another major storyline. Bay City Roller will have just 13 days between two of Europe’s biggest middle-distance races, but his Longchamp performance showed he belongs among the leading horses in the division.
Kalpana Could Chase Historic Ascot Hat-Trick
Kalpana also emerged from the Arc with British Champions Day very much on her agenda after finishing fifth at ParisLongchamp.
Andrew Balding’s mare has won the last two renewals of the British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes and could now attempt to make it three consecutive victories in the Group One contest.
The short turnaround would not be unfamiliar. Kalpana also competed in the Arc before winning at Ascot last season, and Balding indicated after Sunday’s race that British Champions Day could again be considered.
Her potential participation would add further strength to the Fillies & Mares Stakes. Arc third Diamond Necklace also holds an entry, although Aidan O’Brien has suggested a trip to the Breeders’ Cup could instead be considered for her.
Long Distance Cup Picture Changes at Longchamp
The Qatar Racing British Champions Long Distance Cup was another race significantly affected by events in France.
Scandinavia had been prominent among the leading contenders for Ascot after a strong campaign, but his season is now over following defeat to Caballo De Mar in Saturday’s Prix du Cadran.
Aidan O’Brien confirmed after the race that Scandinavia would not run again this year, opening the door for stablemate Jan Brueghel to become one of the leading Long Distance Cup contenders.
Caballo De Mar could also make the journey to Ascot. George Scott indicated that the Long Distance Cup may be the next target if the horse comes through his Longchamp victory well.
Fairy Glen provides another possible link between the two meetings after winning the Prix de Royallieu in France. She holds entries in both the Long Distance Cup and the Fillies & Mares Stakes at Ascot.
True Love Adds Another Option to Champions Sprint
The Arc itself was only part of an important weekend of Group One racing at ParisLongchamp.
True Love won the Prix de la Forêt and remains entered in the British Champions Sprint Stakes, although the Breeders’ Cup Mile is another possible destination following her success in France.
The Champions Sprint picture continues to feature leading performers including Sprint Cup winner Almeraq and July Cup and Flying Five winner Comanche Brave. True Love would provide another interesting challenger if connections decide on Ascot.
British Champions Day Fields Beginning to Take Shape
The final fields will not be confirmed until closer to the meeting, but Arc Weekend has provided much greater clarity around several of the major contenders.
The Qatar Racing Champion Stakes has gained another leading challenger in Bay City Roller, Kalpana could return in search of a remarkable third consecutive Fillies & Mares Stakes victory, while Scandinavia’s absence has changed the complexion of the Long Distance Cup.
British Champions Day features five Group One races alongside the two-year-old conditions race, with £4.35 million in prize money available across the meeting. The Long Distance Cup, Champions Sprint and Fillies & Mares Stakes are each worth £500,000, while some of the biggest names of the Flat season are expected to converge on Ascot.
