Arsenal 3-0 Coventry City: Champions make perfect start to title defence

Arsenal made a commanding start to their Premier League title defence as they swept newly promoted Coventry City aside 3-0 at Emirates Stadium.

Mikel Arteta’s side entered the new campaign as favourites to retain the crown after ending the club’s 22-year wait for a league title last season, and there was little to suggest they will be giving up their position at the top of the pile.

Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka struck inside the opening 23 minutes before captain Martin Odegaard added a third shortly after half-time, with Arsenal enjoying near-total control throughout.

The Gunners were without summer arrival Bruno Guimaraes due to injury, while Viktor Gyokeres began on the bench, but another new recruit provided the spark in an otherwise familiar-looking Arsenal attack.

Christos Tzolis immediately caught the eye on his Premier League debut, cutting in from the left and curling an effort over the crossbar after just five minutes.

The Greek winger continued to cause problems and played a decisive role in Arsenal’s opener after 15 minutes.

Tzolis helped create the opening before Riccardo Calafiori delivered a low ball across the face of goal, allowing Havertz to get ahead of the Coventry defence and turn the cross home.

The Germany international was preferred to Gyokeres from the start and followed up his goal in the Community Shield with another assured finish.

Arsenal doubled their advantage eight minutes later, although Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth will have been disappointed with his contribution.

Rushworth could only palm Tzolis’ low delivery into the path of Saka, who made no mistake from close range with the goal at his mercy.

Odegaard then completed the scoring four minutes after the interval.

The Arsenal captain received the ball from Ben White before beating Rushworth with a scuffed finish to put the result beyond any realistic doubt.

Coventry struggled to create anything of note as Arsenal controlled possession and territory, with the visitors managing just one shot on target across the 90 minutes.

For Frank Lampard’s side, it was a sobering introduction to life back in the Premier League after 25 years away.

Arsenal send an early title warning

It would be premature to draw sweeping conclusions from a single league fixture, but Arsenal’s performance provided plenty of encouragement that they are ready for another serious title challenge.

Declan Rice and Saka both made an impact after being used as substitutes in Sunday’s Community Shield victory over Manchester City, while Havertz has now scored in consecutive matches.

Calafiori was another standout performer, providing constant energy from the left and contributing to the opening goal, while Gabriel looked composed in the centre of defence despite the absence of the injured William Saliba.

The Brazilian will also be looking forward to forming a partnership with new signing Ezri Konsa, who was presented to the Emirates crowd before kick-off.

However, Tzolis arguably stole the show.

The winger’s relentless pressing, movement and creativity made him a constant problem for Coventry, while his involvement in both first-half goals underlined the immediate impact he can have for Arteta’s side.

Arsenal also managed to cruise to victory without needing to call upon Guimaraes, while Gyokeres was restricted to a place on the substitutes’ bench.

That combination will be particularly encouraging for Arteta. The champions were able to maintain a sustained attacking threat while rarely looking vulnerable at the other end, and they appeared to have plenty left in reserve.

If Arsenal can produce performances of this quality while still having key additions and players to return, the rest of the Premier League will have plenty to think about.

Coventry face immediate Premier League reality check

For Coventry’s travelling supporters, the return to the Premier League was an occasion to savour, with thousands making the trip to Emirates Stadium for the club’s first top-flight fixture since 2001.

The result, however, demonstrated just how difficult the challenge ahead will be.

Lampard has considerable Premier League experience, both as a player and manager, but many of his squad are stepping into the division for the first time.

Five of Coventry’s summer arrivals were handed starts, including club-record signing Caleb Yirenkyi, who cost £23m as part of a summer recruitment drive worth around £130m.

The Championship winners were ultimately outplayed and outclassed by a side with title ambitions.

A more significant opportunity to collect points should arrive next week when Coventry host fellow newcomers Hull City at Coventry Building Society Arena.

Starting quickly will be important for Lampard, particularly given the difficulty of Coventry’s opening schedule.

Sunderland and Leeds both demonstrated last season that promoted teams can survive, but seven of the previous nine sides to come up have immediately returned to the Championship.

Three points against Hull, therefore, could prove hugely valuable as the Sky Blues look to establish themselves back in the top flight.
