Arsenal were left frustrated after a draw against Atletico Madrid in a chaotic Champions League semi-final first leg at the Metropolitano, where a late penalty decision was overturned following VAR intervention.

Mikel Arteta’s side had looked on course for a statement away win, continuing a remarkable European run that has now stretched to 13 matches unbeaten in the Champions League, before Eberechi Eze was denied a spot kick.

Arsenal start strongly before Gyokeres delivers

Arsenal began, as many expected they would, dictating the tempo against an Atletico side that struggled to settle early on. Their pressure told when Viktor Gyokeres, was brought down by David Hancko and confidently converted the resulting penalty.

The Gunners’ attacking threat was consistent, with Eze and Declan Rice both central to their build-up play. Rice in particular impressed in midfield, completing 83 passes in total, the second-highest tally by an English midfielder in a Champions League semi-final on record, behind only Michael Carrick’s 99 for Manchester United against Schalke in 2011.

Despite Arsenal’s control, Atletico Madrid always carried a threat, and Julian Alvarez in particular was at the heart of their best moments in the first half.

Atletico Madrid respond through Alvarez and VAR controversy

Atletico Madrid’s response came in a chaotic spell that levelled the tie. Alvarez first went close with a free-kick that drifted narrowly wide, while Antoine Griezmann struck the crossbar in a warning sign for Arsenal, Ademola Lookman also somehow failed to score from close range with the goal gaping.

The pressure eventually told when Ben White was penalised for handball following a VAR review, with his arm judged to be in an unnatural position when struck by Marcos Llorente’s effort. Alvarez stepped up and calmly converted to bring Atletico level at 1-1, swinging momentum firmly in the hosts’ favour.

Arsenal were forced to withstand sustained pressure after the break, and Alvarez continued to dictate attacking play before eventually being withdrawn, a change that helped the visitors regain some control in midfield.

Late VAR drama denies Arsenal winner

Just as Arsenal began to regain confidence, the defining moment of the match arrived in the 78th minute. Eze went down under a challenge from Hancko, and referee Danny Makkelie immediately pointed to the spot for the third time in the match.

However, after being sent to the monitor, the referee overturned his decision, ruling that the contact was insufficient. The decision sparked wild celebrations inside the Metropolitano Stadium and on the Atletico bench, with Diego Simeone visibly animated, while Mikel Arteta was left furious on the touchline.

Arteta described the decision as “completely unacceptable.” Speaking afterwards, he said he was “extremely disappointed and annoyed,” adding that “it changes the course of the tie” and “cannot happen.”

The frustration was amplified by Arsenal’s growing confidence at that stage of the match, with Spaniard Cristhian Mosquera forcing Jan Oblak into a smart save from distance as they pushed for a late winner.

Ahead of the second-leg

Despite the controversy, Arsenal remain well placed in the tie as they head into the second leg at the Emirates Stadium, where they will have the chance to take their place in the Champions League Final.

Arteta praised his side’s composure in dealing with Atletico Madrid’s intense spells of pressure, noting how many elite teams have struggled at the Metropolitano. Diego Simeone, meanwhile, highlighted the competitive nature of Arsenal’s performance, acknowledging the fine margins that defined the encounter.

Arsenal will feel they should have left Spain with more than just a draw, given what might have been if VAR didn’t overturn Hanko’s challenge on Eze.
