Four Days of Racing at the St Leger Festival

The Festival begins on Thursday 10th September with Betfred Ladies Day, combining a busy social occasion with an impressive racing programme.

The latter has traditionally been known as the fillies’ St Leger due to its demanding staying test, while the May Hill Stakes provides an important opportunity for some of the leading two-year-old fillies.

There are few races on the British calendar with a history comparable to the St Leger.

Run over one mile, six furlongs and 115 yards, the Group 1 contest is open to three-year-old colts and fillies and provides a very different challenge to the shorter Classics staged earlier in the season.

The roll of honour stretches across generations of British racing, while recent winners have included Continuous, Jan Brueghel and Scandinavia. The latter provided Aidan O’Brien with his ninth success in the race in 2025 after holding off Rahiebb under Tom Marquand.

Christmas Day Leads Strong Ballydoyle Challenge

One of the headline horses among the current St Leger contenders is Derby winner Christmas Day.

Trained by Aidan O’Brien, Christmas Day provided his trainer with a record-extending 12th Derby triumph at Epsom in June. Ridden by Ronan Whelan, he defeated Maltese Cross by two and three-quarter lengths to also hand O’Brien his 50th British Classic victory as a trainer.

Christmas Day subsequently finished second to stablemate Benvenuto Cellini in the Irish Derby at the Curragh, with Pierre Bonnard completing an Aidan O’Brien-trained one-two-three.

His most recent appearance came in the Great Voltigeur Stakes at York, one of the traditional St Leger trials. Christmas Day finished third behind Maltese Cross and Pierre Bonnard as William Haggas’ colt produced an impressive performance to win by two lengths.

Maltese Cross had subsequently been prominent in the St Leger picture, but connections have elected to bypass Doncaster and instead prepare the Grand Prix de Paris and Great Voltigeur winner for the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp in October.

His absence leaves Christmas Day and Pierre Bonnard among the most prominent horses still being considered for the Doncaster Classic.

Pierre Bonnard Another Major St Leger Contender

Pierre Bonnard has continued to build his own strong profile during the summer.

After finishing seventh in the Derby, the Aidan O’Brien-trained colt improved to take third behind Benvenuto Cellini and Christmas Day in the Irish Derby.

He then produced another step forward at York, finishing second to Maltese Cross in the Great Voltigeur and two places ahead of Christmas Day.
