Billy Loughnane v Oisin Murphy: Jockeys’ Championship Rivals Set for Glorious Goodwood Showdown

The jockeys’ championship battle takes centre stage at Glorious Goodwood on Friday as Billy Loughnane and Oisin Murphy go head-to-head across a packed card on the Downs.

Loughnane currently holds the advantage in the title race, leading Murphy 81 winners to 73, but the pair will have several opportunities to close the gap as they compete for winners across the afternoon.

Murphy gets the first opportunity to make an impact as he partners Berkshire Sundance for Andrew Balding in the opening race.

The six-year-old has won seven times during his career, with Murphy aboard for four of those victories, including his latest success in the Easter Plate Marathon at Newcastle in April.

Berkshire Sundance produced a respectable effort when sixth in the Chester Cup on his next start but struggled to make an impact when eighth in the Queen Alexandra Stakes at Royal Ascot.

A return to winning form would require a career-best effort, but Murphy will be hoping his previous partnership with the gelding can bring out improvement.

Loughnane gets his first chance of the afternoon aboard Charlie Appleby’s Catullus, while Murphy sits out the second race.

The Godolphin runner finished fourth in the Group 3 Tattersalls Stakes at Newmarket last season with Loughnane in the saddle and impressed on his penultimate start when cruising to victory in a seven-furlong handicap at Goodwood under Tom Marquand.

However, Catullus failed to build on that performance when finishing tenth in the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot, leaving him with something to prove on his return to the track.

Stablemate Talk Of New York heads the market and sets the standard.

The two championship contenders finally clash in the competitive Coral Golden Mile, with Murphy appearing to hold the stronger claims aboard Mister Winston.

The Andrew Balding-trained five-year-old has won two of his four starts this season, including a valuable handicap over 1m½f at Epsom on Oaks Day.

He was unable to make an impact when 23rd of 28 in the Royal Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot last time, while his wide draw in stall 19 could make life difficult.

Loughnane partners Ian Williams’ Ozat, who finished behind Mister Winston at Epsom before reversing the form when eighth in the Royal Hunt Cup.

However, he arrives at Goodwood looking to bounce back after finishing last of 14 at Sandown, with his recent form figures now reading 0080.

3.35: King George Qatar Stakes

Murphy teams up with familiar partner Asfoora in the feature sprint, having previously guided the mare to Group 1 victories in the Prix de l’Abbaye and Nunthorpe Stakes last season.

The Australian mare has not quite reached those heights this year, though, and arrives needing to prove she can rediscover her best form after finishing last of nine at Sandown on her latest start.

Loughnane rides Aspect Island for the first time, with James Owen’s sprinter looking an interesting contender following a close third in Listed company at York earlier this month.

A former third-place finisher in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint, Aspect Island could prove capable of outrunning his odds.

Loughnane takes the ride on 2024 Derby runner-up Ambiente Friendly for the first time.

The five-year-old has struggled to reproduce the form that saw him finish second at Epsom and spent time over hurdles before returning to the Flat at Royal Ascot.

He could only manage eighth in the Duke of Edinburgh Stakes last month and faces a difficult task against several proven performers here.

Murphy teams up with Andrew Balding and owner Jeff Smith’s The Dancing Pirate, who could be one of his strongest opportunities on the card.

The colt made his debut at Newmarket with Murphy aboard, finishing fourth of seven, before narrowly missing out when second at Chester last time.

The move into handicap company could unlock further improvement, making him an interesting contender.

5.20: World Pool Bet With The Tote Handicap

The final race sees Loughnane partner Waterford Castle for the Bow Echo team and trainer George Boughey.

The three-year-old has yet to win but has shown plenty of promise, finishing runner-up on five occasions from nine starts, including his latest effort at Yarmouth.

Blinkers are applied for the first time, and another strong performance would not be a surprise as he searches for a breakthrough success.

Murphy partners Andrew Balding’s Mythical Valentine, who won at Windsor earlier this season before struggling when last of three at Salisbury.

First-time cheekpieces are added in an attempt to bring about further improvement.
