Bow Echo and Ombudsman rise to top of Cartier standings after Ascot wins
A pair of headline-making performances from Bow Echo and Ombudsman have not only lit up the week but also shoved both horses firmly into the centre of the Cartier Horse of the Year conversation.
The biggest shift came from Bow Echo, who backed up his 2,000 Guineas success with another top-level display in the St James’s Palace Stakes. Trained by George Boughey, he once again got the better of Gstaad, stamping himself as the leading three-year-old colt of the moment and moving to the summit of the Cartier standings.
Right alongside him is Ombudsman, who delivered one of the performances of the entire meeting in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes. The Godolphin runner powered clear of Minnie Hauk, becoming the first horse in over three decades to win the race twice. That effort has pushed him level at the top of the Horse of the Year rankings.
Both now sit on 80 points alongside True Love, keeping the title picture wide open heading into the second half of the season.
Standout stories across the divisions
The Prince of Wales’s Stakes also tightened the older horse picture. Ombudsman leads that category too, with Daryz close behind, while Ten Bob Tony caused a shock in the Queen Anne Stakes at 50/1 odds and has suddenly forced his way into the conversation.
In the three-year-old colt division, Bow Echo leads from Gstaad, with Christmas Day still in the mix but needing a strong second half of the campaign to close the gap.
Among the fillies, True Love remains out in front in the Cartier Three-Year-Old Filly standings despite a second straight defeat at Ascot in the Coronation Stakes. The results elsewhere, though, are beginning to close things up behind her.
One of the more eye-catching winners of the week was Venetian Sun, who landed the Commonwealth Cup in a tight finish and has now moved to the top of the sprinter rankings. It was a narrow victory, but an important one, and it has shifted momentum firmly in her favour.
In the staying division, Scandinavia produced a gutsy performance to deny defending champion Trawlerman in the Gold Cup, a race that felt like it might swing either way right to the final strides. That win puts him clearly in front in the stamina category, with Caballo De Mar still his nearest challenger.
