Can Lake Forest Complete a Rare Glorious Goodwood Double?

Lake Forest has already made the ideal start to an ambitious Glorious Goodwood campaign after landing Tuesday’s Group 2 Lennox Stakes under Cieren Fallon, and the Richard Hannon-trained star now has the chance to complete a rare festival double in Wednesday’s Group 1 Sussex Stakes.

Victory in the Lennox has put Lake Forest on course for an achievement few horses have even attempted in recent years. Since 2010, only 13 horses have raced twice during the same Glorious Goodwood meeting, with eight winning at least one of those races and only one managing to win both starts.

As attention turns to the Sussex Stakes, here’s a look back at the horses who have tried to complete a Goodwood double over the past 15 years.

Landaman remains the only horse to win twice

The standout success story belongs to Mark Johnston’s Landaman in 2012.

After comfortably landing a 1m2f handicap on the opening day of the meeting, he returned three days later to score again over 1m1f by four lengths, becoming the only horse since 2010 to complete a Glorious Goodwood double.

Those victories extended his unbeaten sequence to four races, although his career ended unexpectedly soon afterwards without another racecourse appearance.

Several horses bounced back from defeat

While no other horse has matched Landaman’s feat, a number have recovered from defeat to win later in the week.

Gary Moore’s Novus went close in 2023, finishing second in a one-mile fillies’ handicap before returning 48 hours later to justify favouritism in another mile handicap under Tom Queally.

Rhoscolyn also turned his week around in 2025. After finishing only 12th in a seven-furlong handicap, David O’Meara’s veteran bounced back to land the prestigious Golden Mile two days later.

Vale Of Kent produced a similar response in 2019, going down by a neck in a seven-furlong handicap before edging home by a nose over the same distance later in the meeting.

Poyle Vinnie also recovered from a narrow defeat, having been beaten just a head in a sprint handicap before winning the Stewards’ Sprint consolation race three days later.

Near misses and unsuccessful follow-ups

Several horses came close to recording two standout performances but ultimately fell short.

Londinium followed up a handicap success in 2017 with an excellent second place two days later after stepping back in trip.

Secret Asset enjoyed victory in a five-furlong handicap in 2011 before finishing seventh in that year’s Stewards’ Cup, while Indescribable caused an 18-1 surprise in a handicap before finishing eighth in the Stewards’ Sprint consolation race later that week.

Sprinter Ornate attempted a quick turnaround in 2019 after finishing third behind Battaash in the King George Stakes, but could only manage 18th in the Stewards’ Cup the following day.

Crimea also produced two solid efforts during the 2010 meeting, finishing third in a handicap before placing fifth in the Stewards’ Sprint.

The Sussex Stakes route is particularly rare

Lake Forest is taking on an especially difficult challenge.

The only horse since 2010 to contest both the Lennox Stakes and Sussex Stakes at the same meeting was So Beloved in 2018.

However, his bid never truly materialised after finishing 11th in the Lennox before running respectably to finish sixth behind Lightning Spear in the Sussex Stakes.

That leaves Lake Forest with the chance to become the first horse in recent years to follow that route successfully.

Others who raced twice

Not every horse benefitted from a second outing at the meeting.

Rules’nregulations finished seventh on consecutive days during the 2011 festival, while Dutch Decoy was unable to improve on a disappointing Golden Mile effort in 2025, following a 12th-place finish with 10th over 1m1f 24 hours later.

Can Lake Forest make history?

Lake Forest has already done the first part by winning the Lennox Stakes in impressive fashion under Cieren Fallon.

Now all eyes are on Wednesday’s Sussex Stakes, where he will attempt to become the first horse since Landaman in 2012 to win twice at the same Glorious Goodwood meeting, and the first in recent memory to complete the Lennox Stakes and Sussex Stakes double.
