Christmas Day Leads St Leger Contenders for Doncaster Classic

The final British Classic of the season takes place at Doncaster Racecourse on Saturday 12^th September, with some of the leading three-year-old stayers set to contest the 2026 Betfred St Leger.

This year’s renewal carries added significance as the St Leger celebrates its 250^th running, while Derby winner Christmas Day has the opportunity to complete a double not achieved since Reference Point in 1987. Twelve horse remained in contention at Monday’s confirmation stage, with Aidan and Joseph O’Brien responsible for seven of them.

Christmas Day

Aidan O’Brien’s Derby winner brings the strongest top-level form into the St Leger and has the opportunity to make racing history at Doncaster. Christmas Day produced the biggest performance of his career when winning at Epsom in June, beating Maltese Cross by two and three-quarter lengths to give O’Brien a record-extending 12th Derby success.

The son of Camelot has also demonstrated his ability on different types of ground, which could prove important after conditions at Doncaster were reported as good to soft earlier this week. His preparation has been centred around the Great Voltigeur Stakes at York, where he returned from almost two months away to finish third behind Maltese Cross and stablemate Pierre Bonnard.

That defeat should not necessarily count heavily against him. The York race provided Christmas Day with a valuable run ahead of the longer St Leger distance and he remains one of only two Group 1 winners among the leading contenders.

One question surrounds the recent form of the Ballydoyle stable, which has endured a relatively quiet spell by its usual standards. However, O’Brien is chasing a fourth consecutive St Leger victory and Christmas Day remains the horse the rest of the field must measure themselves against.

Enceladus

If Christmas Day brings established Classic form, Enceladus brings rapid progression.

The Joseph O’Brien-trained colt is unbeaten in three starts this season, beginning with a maiden victory at Cork before winning the King George V Stakes at Royal Ascot. He then stepped into Group company at Glorious Goodwood and continued his rise with victory in the Group 3 Gordon Stakes.

There is also encouragement that the additional distance at Doncaster will suit him. Enceladus is by Sea The Stars and has stamina in his family, while his performances this season suggest he is continuing to improve as his races become more demanding.

The obvious question is whether he can reproduce that progression at Group 1 level. His Goodwood victory represents his toughest assignment so far, meaning Saturday is another considerable jump in class.

Billy Loughnane has been booked for the ride after regular jockey Dylan Browne McMonagle was sidelined following a fall at Bellewstown. Joseph O’Brien said Enceladus has been “training nicely”, and the colt provides the trainer with a major opportunity to add to his 2020 St Leger success with Galileo Chrome.

Pierre Bonnard

Pierre Bonnard strengthened his St Leger claims by finishing ahead of Christmas Day at York and could again provide serious competition to his stablemate.

The Aidan O’Brien-trained colt finished second behind Maltese Cross in the Great Voltigeur, with Christmas Day back in third. He is also already a Group 1 winner, having landed the Criterium de Saint-Cloud as a two-year-old.

His previous meetings with Christmas Day make the Doncaster rematch particularly interesting. Pierre Bonnard finished behind him in the Ballysax Stakes, Derby and Irish Derby before reversing that form at York, although the conditions of Saturday’s race provide Christmas Day with a more favourable weight comparison than in the Great Voltigeur.

The other issue is stamina. Pierre Bonnard stayed on well when third in the Irish Derby, but Saturday will take him beyond a mile and a half for the first time. His ability to see out the extended 1m6f distance could ultimately decide whether he can turn his consistent Group 1 form into another top-level victory.

Hatteen

Andrew Balding’s Hatteen offers something different to the more established Group performers, having already shown his ability at Doncaster.

He won the St Leger Trial novice over the course in July before producing another strong performance at Glorious Goodwood, where he was beaten by a head in handicap company. Having previous experience at Doncaster is a useful advantage, particularly in a race where several rivals are stepping up significantly in distance.

The challenge is the size of the jump in grade. Hatteen has yet to compete at Listed or Group level and now faces Derby and Group 1 winners in one of the biggest races of the season.

Ground conditions could also be worth watching. His strongest performances have come on quicker going, while Doncaster reported good to soft ground at the beginning of St Leger week.

Highwayman

Highwayman is another improving contender from Joseph O’Brien’s yard, and few horses in the field have responded as strongly to an increase in distance.

After struggling over shorter trips earlier in his career, he improved significantly when winning a Killarney maiden over 1m3½f by nine lengths. He backed that up in the Listed Vinnie Roe Stakes at Leopardstown, winning over 1m6f and providing strong evidence that stamina will not be an issue at Doncaster.

Saffie Osborne is booked to ride Highwayman, who gives Joseph O’Brien a second St Leger contender alongside Enceladus.

Like Hatteen, however, he is being asked to make a considerable leap in class. Moving from Listed company into a British Classic is a major test, but his improvement since being stepped up in trip makes him one of the more interesting outsiders among the confirmed runners.

The O’Brien influence extends well beyond the three leading names. Aidan O’Brien also has Amelia Earhart, Piazza San Marco and Action among the 12 horses left in the race, while Alderman, Galiyan, Golden Story and Rebel Rocker complete the current list alongside the five leading contenders.

The strength of the Ballydoyle contingent means final declarations and jockey bookings could still alter the complexion of the contest. What is already clear is that the St Leger has developed into a major battle between established Classic performers and improving stayers attempting to reach Group 1 level.

Christmas Day sets the standard

Christmas Day enters St Leger week with the strongest overall credentials. He is already a Derby winner, has proven himself at Group 1 level and should benefit from his Great Voltigeur return at York.

Enceladus represents perhaps the most significant challenge after three consecutive victories this season, while Pierre Bonnard has already demonstrated that he is capable of finishing ahead of the Derby winner. Hatteen and Highwayman face much larger rises in class but arrive with proven form over or around the distances required at Doncaster.

Saturday will provide the decisive test. If Christmas Day can return to his Epsom form over the extended trip, he has the chance to become the first horse for 39 years to win both the Derby and St Leger.
