Constitution Hill Ruled Out of Newbury Group 3 Due to Ground Concerns

Constitution Hill will not run in Saturday’s Group 3 Dubai Duty Free Finest Surprise Stakes at Newbury Racecourse after connections opted against taking a risk on quick ground.
Trainer Nicky Henderson had made it clear earlier in the week that conditions would be the deciding factor, and that stance has now been confirmed with the decision to withdraw the nine-year-old. Following an inspection of the track, Henderson and owner Michael Buckley agreed that the ground was unsuitable.
Reports indicate the going was considered too firm for the horse, with Henderson noting concerns about the risk of injury on quicker terrain. A large, heavy-framed horse, Constitution Hill has shown a preference for softer conditions throughout his career, making this a precautionary decision rather than a setback in terms of illness or injury.
The withdrawal brings an end to what had been building as the main talking point ahead of the Newbury meeting. Constitution Hill had been expected to take a significant step up in class in the Group 3 contest, his first run on turf since switching to the Flat.
He remains unbeaten in his new discipline, having won both starts on the all-weather at Southwell and Kempton. Those performances suggested he retained much of the ability that previously made him one of the leading hurdlers in training, including his incredible victory in the 2022 Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.
However, his jumping career was brought to an end after three falls in his last four starts over hurdles. Connections subsequently decided to focus on the Flat in order to continue his career in a safer environment.
Prior to his withdrawal, Constitution Hill had been priced at around 9/2 for Saturday’s race, reflecting both his unbeaten Flat record and the uncertainty surrounding his participation. The market is now expected to adjust, with runners such as Convergent, Al Aasy and Pride Of Arras likely to head into the Grade 3 among the favourites.
Ryan Moore had been booked to ride if the horse had taken his chance, further underlining the intent behind the planned run. However, with conditions not in his favour, connections have chosen to wait for a more suitable opportunity.
Attention will now turn to potential alternative targets later in the season. Henderson has indicated a desire to give the horse another run before a summer break, provided suitable ground can be found.
While his absence is a disappointment for the Newbury card, the decision reflects a long-term approach, with Constitution Hill’s wellbeing remaining the priority.
