Constitution Hill’s Newbury Run in Doubt Ahead of Group 3 Assignment

Coral Gold Cup Day 2025 - Newbury Racecourse Horse Racing - Silks Restaurant Hospitality

Constitution Hill is scheduled to run in Saturday’s Group 3 Dubai Duty Free Finest Surprise Stakes (2.35) at Newbury Racecourse.

However, his participation remains uncertain as trainer Nicky Henderson continues to monitor ground conditions ahead of the weekend.

The going at Newbury is expected to be on the quicker side, and Henderson has made it clear that he will not risk one of his stable stars on unsuitable terrain. A final decision is likely to be made closer to the off, with weather forecasts playing a decisive role in whether the horse takes his chance.

Constitution Hill arrives at this potential assignment with an unbeaten record on the Flat. Having transitioned from National Hunt racing, he has adapted well to his new discipline, and Saturday’s Group 3 contest would represent a significant step up in class. A strong performance would further establish his credentials on the level and provide valuable insight into his future campaign.

The gelding first rose to prominence with a commanding victory in the 2022 Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, winning by 22-lengths and setting a track record. That success confirmed him as one of the leading hurdlers of his generation and significantly enhanced his profile within the sport.

Despite an outstanding start over obstacles, his jumping career encountered setbacks. After suffering three falls in his final four races over hurdles, connections made the decision to retire him from National Hunt competition. The move was designed to preserve his wellbeing while allowing him to continue racing on the Flat, where his ability and cruising speed could still be utilised.

Saturday’s race, registered as the John Porter Stakes and run over a mile and a half, has long been recognised as an important early-season Group contest for middle-distance performers. It regularly attracts high-quality fields and serves as a stepping stone to major summer targets. Should Constitution Hill line up, he would face a competitive test against established Flat performers.

Runners such as Convergent, Eydon, Pride Of Arras and Phantom Flight bring established Group and Listed form into the contest, while others like Lion’s Pride add further depth to the line-up.

In the betting, Convergent has been installed among the early favourites, with Al Aasy and Pride Of Arras also prominent in the market. Constitution Hill has been priced around the 9/2 mark with some firms, reflecting both his unbeaten Flat record and the uncertainty surrounding his participation. Market fluctuations are expected in the lead-up to the race, particularly if there is a firm indication regarding whether he will run.

Adding further interest to the potential appearance, Ryan Moore is set to take the ride. Moore’s experience at the highest level brings added credibility to the challenge and signals the intent of connections as they assess the horse’s capabilities in Pattern company.

For now, attention remains on the conditions at Newbury. Henderson is expected to make a late call, prioritising the horse’s welfare and long-term future. If the ground proves suitable, Constitution Hill’s presence would be one of the most notable features of the weekend’s racing. Should he be withdrawn, connections will instead look ahead to alternative opportunities later in the season.
