Dan Skelton Makes History as Jump Racing Returns at Cheltenham Showcase
The jumps are back at Cheltenham, and the 2026 Showcase Meeting served up an exciting start to the new season, with big-priced winners, impressive performances and a record-breaking weekend for Dan Skelton.
Racing returned to Prestbury Park on Friday 23rd and Saturday 24th October, with 14 races across two days giving National Hunt fans plenty to talk about. Kingofthefrontier caused a 20/1 upset, JPR One produced an excellent performance under top weight, and Skelton made history with a memorable Saturday double.
With the Cheltenham Festival still several months away, the opening meeting has already thrown up a number of horses worth following as the 2026/27 campaign gathers momentum.
Kingofthefrontier Springs 20/1 Surprise on Opening Day
One of the biggest results of the weekend came on Friday afternoon when Kingofthefrontier defied odds of 20/1 to win the Grade 2 Oddschecker Novices’ Hurdle.
Trained by John Dawson and ridden by Conor O’Farrell, the five-year-old arrived at Cheltenham following a victory at Southwell in June, but faced a considerable step up in class against more established opposition.
Despite being among the outsiders, Kingofthefrontier produced an impressive finish to defeat Planters Punch by two and a quarter-lengths, with the 13/8 favourite Cooltobecareless finishing third.
The victory was the biggest of Dawson’s training career and provided an early reminder that the opening weeks of the National Hunt season can produce some unexpected results.
JPR One Defies Top Weight to Secure Cheltenham Victory
Another standout performance on Friday came courtesy of JPR One, who carried 12 stone to victory in the £100,000 squareintheair.com Handicap Chase.
The Joe Tizzard-trained nine-year-old faced a strong field that included Calico, winner of the contest in each of the previous two seasons.
Ridden by Brendan Powell, JPR One moved into contention approaching the final two fences and eventually got the better of Calico before holding off a late challenge from Traprain Law.
The 3/1 joint-favourite crossed the line three-quarters of a length clear, producing an excellent weight-carrying performance against his rivals.
Tizzard subsequently confirmed that the Shloer Chase at Cheltenham’s November Meeting would be the next target for JPR One, providing another opportunity to test himself against high-quality opposition.
Gordon Elliott and Jack Kennedy Complete Friday Double
Irish trainer Gordon Elliott also enjoyed a successful opening day at Cheltenham, combining with jockey Jack Kennedy to secure two winners.
Their first victory came through Bowensonfire, who justified even-money favouritism in the Catesby Estates ‘Chasing Excellence’ Novices’ Chase.
The six-year-old overcame some early jumping difficulties before moving past Passing Diamond in the closing stages to secure victory by one and three-quarter lengths.
Elliott suggested that Bowensonfire could eventually be suited to the Grand Annual at the Cheltenham Festival in March.
The pair completed their double later in the afternoon when Cosmos D’Ainay won the McCoy Contractors Novices’ Hurdle at odds of 11/1.
Having previously been beaten at Listowel, Cosmos D’Ainay returned to winning ways with a three-length victory over Kingstonian, rounding off a successful Friday for the Irish stable.
Dan Skelton Makes History with Saturday Double
Saturday belonged to Dan Skelton, who reached £1 million in seasonal prize money faster than any previous National Hunt trainer following the victory of Here Comes Georgie.
Purchased for just £7,000 earlier in the year, the eight-year-old made an immediate impact on his first appearance for Skelton in the £100,000 William Hill Best Odds Guaranteed Handicap Chase.
With Harry Skelton in the saddle, the 3/1 favourite moved into contention approaching the final fence before finding enough to hold off Katate Dori by one and a quarter lengths.
The result took Skelton past the £1 million mark before the end of October, underlining his remarkable start to the 2026/27 campaign.
The trainer has already suggested that Here Comes Georgie could head towards the Coral Gold Cup at Newbury or the Becher Chase at Aintree.
Just 35 minutes later, the Skelton brothers completed their double when North Shore claimed the Masterson Holdings Hurdle.
Following a disappointing stable debut at Chepstow, the four-year-old responded positively to the application of cheekpieces and produced a commanding seven-length victory over Indian River.
Seaniecon and Butch Cassidy Impress on Final Day
Saturday also featured a notable victory for Seaniecon, who won the Pertemps Network Handicap Hurdle for trainers Jonjo and AJ O’Neill.
Making his first appearance in 177 days, the five-year-old produced a strong finish under Jonjo O’Neill Jr to defeat Gold For Alec by one and a quarter lengths.
The victory has put Seaniecon firmly in contention for a return to Cheltenham in March, with the Pertemps Final identified as a likely target.
Later in the afternoon, Butch Cassidy continued his excellent form over fences with victory in the William Hill Price Boosts ‘Chasing Excellence’ Novices’ Chase.
Trained by Henry de Bromhead and ridden by Darragh O’Keeffe, the gelding registered his third consecutive chasing success, finishing 14 lengths ahead of Follow Your Luck after Turndlightsdownlow fell at the final fence.
Elsewhere, O’Moore Park produced another surprise by winning Saturday’s opening novices’ handicap chase at odds of 25/1 under Sean Bowen.
The two-day meeting concluded with Ballycrystal Boy winning the National Hunt Flat Race for trainer Jamie Snowden.
Attention Turns to Cheltenham’s November Meeting
With the Showcase Meeting complete, attention now turns to the next major fixture at Cheltenham Racecourse, the November Meeting, which takes place from Friday 13th to Sunday 15th November 2026.
The three-day meeting will feature several important early-season contests, including the Paddy Power Gold Cup and the Shloer Chase, with JPR One among the horses expected to return to Prestbury Park.
Beyond November, the performances of Seaniecon, Bowensonfire and Butch Cassidy have provided some early talking points ahead of the 2027 Cheltenham Festival.
The opening weekend has certainly given jump racing fans plenty to look forward to, with several exciting contests still to come as the National Hunt season gathers pace.
