Enzo Fernandez Inspires Chelsea Win As Tottenham Face Dramatic Final Day
Tottenham Hotspur will take their battle for Premier League survival to the final day of the season after suffering a narrow defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. The result leaves Spurs needing just a point to secure their top-flight status heading into a dramatic final weekend.
Spurs knew that three points would guarantee survival at the expense of West Ham United, and a point would’ve almost certainly been enough to ensure their top-flight status due to their much superior goal difference.
However, after defeat against rivals Chelsea, they will go into their final game of the season against Everton with just a two-point gap between themselves and West Ham.
Chelsea, who have announced the impending arrival of Xabi Alonso as manager, took the lead after 18 minutes when Enzo Fernandez’s long-range effort got the better of Spurs keeper Antonin Kinsky.
Mathys Tel nearly clawed Spurs back into the game when his header struck the woodwork in the first half but they struggled to worry Robert Sanchez’s net until later on in the match.
Richarlison gave Spurs hope with 16 minutes left, but they could not add the second goal that would have virtually kept Roberto De Zerbi’s men in the Premier League; they will now be heading into the final day needing a draw to keep themselves in the top-flight.
Spurs were furious when they were denied a late penalty after Marc Cucurella was cautioned for dragging down Micky van de Ven at a corner, but it was adjudged the ball was not yet in play.
The win improves Chelsea’s chances of European football next season as they moved up to eighth, ahead of Brentford on goal difference.
Despite a poor record at Stamford Bridge, Spurs will see last night’s result as a missed opportunity, facing a Chelsea side whose form has been indifferent and a side that were comfortably beaten in the FA Cup Final just a few days ago.
Spurs started brightly, but once Chelsea went ahead through Fernandez, there was a lack of urgency until it was too late, namely after Santos had put them two goals in arrears.
Santos’ goal came just as head coach De Zerbi was about to make three substitutions, including James Maddison, who led lengthy Spurs protests to referee Stuart Attwell at the final whistle.
Unfortunately for the visitors, the reality was that they just didn’t threaten the Chelsea defence enough, despite a late flurry. Sanchez looked very rarely in trouble throughout the 90 minutes.
To West Ham’s delight, it now all goes down to the final day with the Hammers hosting Leeds United while Tottenham host David Moyes’ Everton.
A point will almost certainly be enough to keep them in the Premier League, but nerves will be felt throughout the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
