Football Turns: Everything Changes in April

April is the month when the teams that’ve spent the whole season building towards something finally find out if it was worth it. English football fans are in for an extraordinary ride with European quarter-finals, a Premier League title crunch, FA Cup drama, and a farewell to one of the greatest players of his generation.

FA Cup: Quarter-Final Weekend

The FA Cup quarter-finals land on Easter weekend this year. Manchester City host Liverpool with a Wembley semi-final on the line – the two clubs have spent the last decade defining English football. Meanwhile, Arsenal travel to Southampton, who, despite their league struggles, have quietly beaten stronger opponents in this competition. Chelsea host League One’s Port Vale, and West Ham face Leeds. By Sunday evening, four clubs will be out, and the rest will be halfway to Wembley.

Champions League Quarter Finals

Arsenal

Arsenal have played 10 Champions League games this season, winning nine, scoring 26 goals, and conceding just five. They have been the most complete side in Europe this season, and Mikel Arteta has built something that is genuinely difficult to beat. Their opponents are Sporting CP, with the first leg in Lisbon on April 7 and the return at the Emirates on April 15.

Liverpool

Liverpool’s path is arguably the toughest of anyone left in the competition. They face defending champions Paris Saint-Germain – a rematch of last season’s last-16 tie, when PSG knocked Liverpool out on penalties. The first leg is away in Paris on April 8, with the return at Anfield on April 14.

Then came news that will define the end of an era. Liverpool have (eventually) confirmed that Mohamed Salah will leave the club at the end of the 2025-26 season, bringing to a close a remarkable nine-year chapter at Anfield. Signed in the summer of 2017, Salah has scored 255 goals in 435 appearances and has won two Premier Leagues, one Champions League, one FA Cup, and a stack of other trophies along the way. Bittersweet, yet he’ll never walk alone!

Europa League: Aston Villa’s Shot at History

In October 2022, Aston Villa were fighting relegation. Today, they are in their third consecutive European quarter-final, and on the verge of history. Unai Emery has won this competition four times and knows every stage of this journey: the tension, the margins, and the moments that separate good teams from great ones. He has built something special at Villa Park, quietly and deliberately, and now the whole of Europe is paying attention. Villa face Italian side Bologna in the quarter-finals, with the first leg in Bologna on April 9 and the return at Villa Park on April 16.

Premier League: The Title Decider

After the Carabao Cup final, Man City host Arsenal in what could be the defining Premier League fixture of the season. For Arsenal, the game at the Etihad would feel like a chance at revenge. For City, a win would prove they are still the team to beat.
