The Stars Entered for British Champions Day 2026

The first major entry stage has provided an early indication of the quality that could be heading to Berkshire in October.

A total of 45 horses were entered for the Qatar Racing Champion Stakes, including 2025 winner Calandagan and runner-up Ombudsman. Among the leading three-year-olds entered are Constitution River and Diamond Necklace, while the other Group 1 races have also attracted many of the standout performers of the season.

Final fields will not be known until much closer to the raceday, but the early lists leave open the possibility of several major rematches at Ascot.

Could Calandagan and Ombudsman Meet Again?

The £1.3 million Qatar Racing Champion Stakes is the headline contest of the afternoon and could once again bring together some of the strongest middle-distance horses in Europe.

Calandagan produced one of the performances of Champions Day in 2025 when defeating Ombudsman in the Champion Stakes. The quality of that renewal was subsequently recognised at the Longines World Racing Awards, where it was named the joint-highest-rated race staged anywhere in the world during 2025.

Both horses feature among the initial entries for 2026, although Calandagan’s participation remains uncertain after connections indicated in August that defending his Japan Cup crown is a priority later in the year.

Ombudsman has already enjoyed another major campaign. The Godolphin star was an impressive four-length winner of the Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot in June before finishing fourth in a highly anticipated Juddmonte International at York in August.

Constitution River is another fascinating name amongst the Champion Stakes entries. Aidan O’Brien’s colt won the Prix du Jockey Club before adding the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown, where he powered three lengths clear of his rivals. He subsequently finished third behind Item and Almaqam in the Juddmonte International.

Should several of those names remain in contention, the Champion Stakes could once again provide a fitting centrepiece to the afternoon.

Kalpana Could Return to a Favourite Venue

Few horses have strengthened their reputation more during 2026 than Kalpana.

The Andrew Balding-trained mare already has an excellent record at Ascot and won the Fillies & Mares Stakes on British Champions Day in 2025.

She returned to the racecourse in July to land one of the biggest prizes of the summer, beating Calandagan by a length and a half in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. Kalpana then followed that performance with another Group 1 success in the Yorkshire Oaks at York in August.

The five-year-old heads a sizeable list of 48 early entries for the Qatar Racing British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes, alongside names including Minnie Hauk, Thundering On and Johanna Walsh.

A return to Ascot would give Kalpana the opportunity to defend the crown she won 12 months earlier.

Diamond Necklace Among a Strong Group of Three-Year-Olds

Diamond Necklace is another of the leading names entered across the Champions Day programme.

The Aidan O’Brien-trained filly delivered a dominant display in the Nassau Stakes at Goodwood in July, beating Friendly Soul by two and three-quarter lengths to secure Group 1 honours.

She features among the Champion Stakes entries and is also entered in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, giving connections options over both ten furlongs and a mile.

The latter could be another particularly strong race. A total of 36 horses featured among the early entries for the £1.1 million contest, including Diamond Necklace alongside Bow Echo, Blue Bolt, Docklands, Gstaad, Precise, Ten Bob Tony, Thesecretadversary and True Love.

Trawlerman and Scandinavia Could Renew Their Ascot Rivalry

The stayers could provide another fascinating rematch in the Qatar Racing British Champions Long Distance Cup.

Trawlerman won this contest on Champions Day in 2025 before returning to Ascot for the Gold Cup at the Royal Meeting this summer.

There he became involved in a memorable battle with Scandinavia over two and a half miles. Trawlerman attempted to make all under William Buick, but Ryan Moore and Scandinavia gradually wore him down before getting ahead close to the finish. The victory was also Aidan O’Brien’s 100th at Royal Ascot.

Both Trawlerman and Scandinavia are among the 38 early entries for the Long Distance Cup in October, with Caballo De Mar and Limestone also featuring.

Leading Sprinters Target Ascot

Six furlongs of the Ascot straight will decide the Qatar Racing British Champions Sprint Stakes, and the initial entries contain several horses who have already won at the highest level this season.

Among them is Almeraq, who landed the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot in June, while Comanche Brave won the July Cup at Newmarket the following month.

Venetian Sun is another notable entry after winning the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot, while Mission Central secured Group 1 success in the King Charles III Stakes earlier in the same meeting.

Those four are amongst 42 horses initially entered for the £500,000 Sprint Stakes, leaving the possibility of several of Britain’s leading speedsters meeting in one final major six-furlong contest of the season.

Seven Races on British Champions Day

The expansion introduced in 2025 means Qatar Racing British Champions Day once again features seven races.

The Group 1 Long Distance Cup begins the racing at 12:55pm, followed by the six-furlong Two-Year-Old Conditions Stakes at 1:20pm.

The Champions Sprint Stakes follows at 2:05pm before the Fillies & Mares Stakes at 2:45pm. The Queen Elizabeth II Stakes takes place at 3:25pm, followed by the £1.3 million Champion Stakes at 4:05pm and the Balmoral Handicap at 4:40pm.

Five of those seven contests carry Group 1 status, making Champions Day the only British raceday to stage five races at the highest level on the same afternoon.

Racing and Entertainment at Ascot

The action will not finish when the final horses cross the line.

Qatar Racing British Champions Day traditionally combines the conclusion of the Flat season with a wider day of entertainment at Ascot, and the 2026 meeting will feature another post-racing afterparty.

Drum and bass duo SIGMA are confirmed to headline this year’s celebrations, with saxophonist Ellie Sax also joining the line-up following the conclusion of the racing.
