Indian River and Lord Byron Set for Cheltenham Showcase Clash On Saturday
Indian River and Lord Byron will renew their rivalry at Cheltenham Racecourse on Saturday, 24th October, when they contest the £40,000 Masterson Holdings Hurdle on the second day of the William Hill Showcase Meeting.
The two four-year-olds previously met in March’s JCB Triumph Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival and are among seven declared runners for Saturday’s 3:30pm contest. The Class 2 race, staged over just beyond two miles, also features leading contenders from the yards of Dan Skelton, Harry Derham and Jane Williams.
With both Indian River and Lord Byron having competed in Grade 1 company earlier this year, the race offers an opportunity to assess their progress as Cheltenham’s 2026/27 National Hunt season gets underway.
Indian River Looking to Build on Aintree Performance
Adrian Keatley’s Indian River returns to Cheltenham after finishing tenth in the Triumph Hurdle in March, a race won by Willie Mullins’ 50/1 outsider Apolon De Charnie.
However, the four-year-old produced a considerably better performance on his next appearance, finishing third in the Grade 1 Anniversary Juvenile Hurdle at Aintree in April. He was beaten by Mange Tout and Selma De Vary, with the latter subsequently securing Grade 1 success in France.
Indian River made his seasonal reappearance at Market Rasen last month, finishing seventh in a handicap hurdle. That outing provided valuable race fitness ahead of his return to Cheltenham, where Brian Hughes is booked to ride.
The Keatley-trained runner will carry 11st on Saturday and is among the leading contenders to secure an early-season victory.
Lord Byron Returns After Strong Spring Campaign
Faye Bramley’s Lord Byron finished fifth in the Triumph Hurdle at odds of 80/1, outperforming market expectations in a competitive 20-runner field.
The four-year-old subsequently finished fourth in a Grade 1 novice hurdle at Aintree before producing another impressive performance at Punchestown in May, finishing second to King Rasko Grey by just a head.
Those performances established Lord Byron as a competitive performer at a high level, although he is still searching for his first victory over hurdles.
His most recent appearance came at Chepstow on 9th October, when he finished sixth in the Grade 2 Persian War Novices’ Hurdle. Saturday’s return to a shorter distance could present a different challenge, with Harry Cobden once again taking the ride.
North Shore and One Horse Town Among Main Rivals
The contest is far from a two-horse race, with Dan Skelton’s North Shore another notable contender following his fourth-place finish in the Persian War Novices’ Hurdle earlier this month.
North Shore also competed in March’s Triumph Hurdle, finishing twelfth, and now represents the Skelton yard with Harry Skelton booked to ride.
Harry Derham’s One Horse Town brings proven Cheltenham form, having won at the racecourse in November 2025. The four-year-old also finished second in a Triumph Hurdle trial in January and was subsequently thirteenth in the Festival contest.
Derham has specifically targeted the Masterson Holdings Hurdle with One Horse Town, who finished second on the Flat at Salisbury earlier this month. He will be partnered by Paul O’Brien but must carry an 8lb penalty.
Jane Williams’ La Luna Artista is another runner worth following, having won the Grade 2 Adonis Juvenile Hurdle at Kempton earlier this year. In The Minus and Tunisya complete the seven-runner field.
Cheltenham Showcase Meeting Continues on Saturday
The Masterson Holdings Hurdle is one of seven races scheduled for the second day of the Cheltenham Showcase Meeting.
Saturday’s racing begins at 1:10pm, with the William Hill Best Odds Guaranteed Handicap Chase scheduled for 2:55pm and the Masterson Holdings Hurdle following at 3:30pm.
The meeting marks Cheltenham’s return to competitive racing following the extensive drainage improvements carried out earlier this year. Attention will soon turn to The November Meeting, taking place from 13th to 15th November, as the National Hunt season gathers momentum.
