Jockeys’ Championship standings: Billy Loughnane leads Oisin Murphy in title race

The race to be crowned British Flat Jockeys’ Champion is entering a crucial stage, with the season moving past Glorious Goodwood and onto York’s Ebor Festival towards the end of the month.

Billy Loughnane remains the man to beat after another outstanding spell in the saddle strengthened his grip on top spot. However, defending champion Oisin Murphy is still well within touching distance, while Rossa Ryan, Cieren Fallon and Jason Hart continue to chase down the leading pair.

With plenty of high-profile racing still to come before Champions Day brings the Flat season to a close, every winner could prove crucial in the fight for the Jockeys’ Championship.

5. Jason Hart

Jason Hart has climbed into the top five of the Jockeys’ Championship standings after a strong end to July.

The Group 1-winning rider has now surpassed £1 million in prize-money for the sixth consecutive season, underlining his consistency at the highest level.

Hart finished July with 23 winners, matching his best monthly total after completing a treble at Beverley. The achievement equalled the tally he recorded in June 2025 and capped an impressive period of form.

Having reached 100 winners in four of the last five seasons, Hart will be aiming to maintain his recent momentum as he looks to reach the landmark figure once again.

4. Cieren Fallon

Cieren Fallon has continued his excellent 2026 campaign and currently sits fourth in the Jockeys’ Championship standings.

After recording 136 winners in Britain last season, Fallon has already registered 72 victories this year and has enjoyed a productive partnership with William Haggas.

The rider secured Group 2 success at Glorious Goodwood aboard Lake Forest in the Lennox Stakes, having previously partnered the same horse to Listed victory at Haydock. He has also enjoyed Listed success with Al Aasy and Tenability for the Haggas yard.

Fallon ended July with 14 winners from 71 rides, operating at a strike-rate of 20 per cent, and holds a clear advantage over the riders immediately behind him.

3. Rossa Ryan

Rossa Ryan remains third in the Jockeys’ Championship standings but has seen his challenge disrupted by two significant suspensions.

The Arc-winning jockey missed Glorious Goodwood after receiving a ban for using his whip once above the permitted level aboard Tabletalk in the Group 3 Silver Cup at York.

Ryan returned to action but will be absent again later in the season after being suspended for easing up on Thunder Home at Sandown last month. He is able to ride until August 6 before serving a 28-day ban, which runs until September 2.

The enforced absence will limit Ryan’s opportunities during one of the busiest periods of the Flat season as he attempts to close the gap on those above him.

2. Oisin Murphy

Defending champion Oisin Murphy remains Billy Loughnane’s closest challenger in the Jockeys’ Championship despite a relatively quiet Glorious Goodwood.

The five-time champion recorded one winner during the festival, with Naana’s Shadow providing his success for trainer Katie Scott.

Murphy responded immediately with a four-timer at Chester on Sunday, ensuring he began August in strong form.

Despite his quieter week at Goodwood, Murphy ended July with 24 winners and more than £1 million in prize-money. The experienced rider is expected to remain a major contender in the closing months of the season as he bids to defend his title.

Billy Loughnane remains at the top of the Jockey’s Championship standings after a standout run of form throughout July.

The young rider enjoyed a successful Glorious Goodwood, recording three winners during the festival, including another impressive victory aboard unbeaten star Bow Echo in the Sussex Stakes.

Loughnane continued his excellent form at Newmarket, where he completed a treble with Romantic Symphony, Tryst and Hollywell Stream.

His 35 winners during July represented the best monthly total of his career, while he operated at a 23 per cent strike-rate and accumulated more than £1.8 million in prize money.

With a significant advantage over Oisin Murphy and a busy domestic schedule ahead, Loughnane will be looking to continue his form as he targets his first British Flat Jockeys’ Championship title.
