Ombudsman Dominates as Billy Loughnane Makes History at Champions Day
British Champions Day 2026 delivered a memorable afternoon at Ascot Racecourse, with five Group 1 contests, a Champion Stakes rematch and a historic achievement for Billy Loughnane.
The 2026 Qatar Racing British Champions Day brought the curtain down on another major chapter of the British Flat racing season on Saturday 17th October, with more than 32,000 spectators attending Ascot Racecourse for Britain’s richest raceday.
With £4.35 million in prize money across seven races, the afternoon featured outstanding performances from Ombudsman, Almeraq and Minnie Hauk, while William Buick enjoyed a remarkable treble.
Away from the racing, 20-year-old Billy Loughnane was crowned Britain’s Champion Jockey for the first time, becoming the youngest rider to claim the title in more than a century.
Ombudsman Beats Calandagan in Champion Stakes Rematch
The afternoon’s headline contest saw Ombudsman produce a commanding performance to win the Group 1 Champion Stakes, reversing the result of his meeting with Calandagan in the same race 12 months earlier.
Trained by John and Thady Gosden and ridden by William Buick, the Godolphin-owned five-year-old went into the contest looking to respond to his disappointing fourth-place finish in August’s Juddmonte International at York.
Ombudsman delivered an impressive display over Ascot’s mile-and-a-quarter course, accelerating clear in the closing stages to defeat Calandagan by three and three-quarter lengths, with Bay City Roller finishing third.
Buick Completes Treble as Group 1 Winners Impress
William Buick enjoyed an outstanding afternoon at Ascot, recording three victories across the seven-race card. Alongside his success aboard Ombudsman, the jockey partnered Talk Of New York to victory in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes and Fifth Column in the concluding Balmoral Handicap.
Talk Of New York, trained by Charlie Appleby, secured his Group 1 success by a length and a quarter from Ten Bob Tony, with Rayif taking third. It was another significant result for Godolphin, whose familiar blue silks featured prominently throughout the afternoon.
Elsewhere, Almeraq justified favouritism in the British Champions Sprint Stakes for trainer William Haggas and jockey Tom Marquand. The four-year-old held off Paborus by a neck to add another major victory to his impressive 2026 campaign.
Aidan O’Brien also enjoyed Group 1 success as Minnie Hauk claimed the Fillies & Mares Stakes under Ryan Moore. The four-year-old finished a length and a half clear of Believed, while defending champion Kalpana could manage only seventh after bidding for a third consecutive victory in the race.
One of the afternoon’s biggest surprises came in the Long Distance Cup, where Andrew Balding’s Mount Atlas won at odds of 33/1 under PJ McDonald. The result strengthened Balding’s challenge against Aidan O’Brien for the British Flat trainers’ championship, with the title battle remaining unresolved after Champions Day.

Billy Loughnane Crowned Champion Jockey at Just 20
Away from the individual race results, British Champions Day marked a significant milestone for Billy Loughnane, who officially received his first Champion Jockey title at Ascot.
At just 20 years old, Loughnane became the youngest winner of the British Flat jockeys’ championship since Charlie Elliott in 1923, ending Oisin Murphy’s reign as champion.
The young rider had recorded 159 victories during the championship period heading into the final weekend, having enjoyed a breakthrough campaign that included multiple major victories aboard Bow Echo.
Among his achievements were wins in the 2,000 Guineas, St James’s Palace Stakes and Sussex Stakes, helping establish Loughnane as one of Flat racing’s leading riders.
Despite securing his first championship, Loughnane already has another historic target in his sights. The jockey is pursuing Sir Gordon Richards’ long-standing record of 269 winners in a calendar year, set in 1947.
His coronation at Ascot was a fitting recognition of an outstanding season, and one of the defining moments of British Champions Day 2026.
More Than 32,000 Attend a Memorable Day at Ascot
The racing was accompanied by a lively atmosphere throughout Ascot Racecourse, with 32,140 spectators attending the 2026 meeting.
That figure represented the second-highest attendance in British Champions Day’s history, falling just 208 short of the record crowd that witnessed Frankel’s final race in 2012.
The occasion also welcomed Queen Camilla and Zara Tindall, adding to the day’s celebrations. In a particularly memorable moment, the Queen selected Talk Of New York as the best-turned-out horse before he went on to win the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes.
Racegoers enjoyed favourable autumn conditions, with the racing taking place on good ground as some of the leading horses, jockeys and trainers from Britain and Ireland competed for major honours.
From Ombudsman’s impressive Champion Stakes triumph to Loughnane’s historic coronation and Buick’s three victories, the 2026 meeting provided a memorable conclusion to the championship season and another successful edition of one of the biggest occasions in British Flat racing.
