Premier League Heats Up as Newcastle Host West Ham and Arsenal Chase Title
The Premier League season is edging towards a dramatic conclusion with Champions League qualification, relegation and the title race all still on the line heading into another huge weekend of action.
Aston Villa vs Liverpool
Friday night’s showdown at Villa Park could have major implications in the race for Champions League football as Aston Villa and Liverpool meet with only goal difference separating them in the table.
Liverpool sit fourth ahead of Villa in fifth, while Bournemouth remain four points back in sixth with two matches left to play.
Villa’s league form has dipped during their Europa League run, but Unai Emery’s side secured a place in the final after beating Nottingham Forest 4-1 on aggregate. They have collected just one point from their last three Premier League matches after drawing with Burnley following defeats to Fulham and Tottenham.
Despite that, Villa still have control of their top-five destiny and could also qualify for the Champions League by beating Freiburg in the Europa League final later this month.
History favours Liverpool, though. Villa have managed only one win in their last 16 Premier League meetings with the Reds, although that famous 7-2 victory in 2020 remains unforgettable for supporters.
Liverpool arrive after another disappointing display in a 1-1 draw against Chelsea. Arne Slot’s side also lost 3-2 at Manchester United earlier this month and have struggled away from home throughout the campaign, losing eight of their 18 league matches on the road.
Villa remain without Boubacar Kamara, Alysson and Amadou Onana, while Ollie Watkins heads into the game in outstanding form with 12 goal involvements in his last 13 appearances.
Liverpool are missing Conor Bradley, Hugo Ekitike, Giovanni Leoni and Wataru Endo. Mohamed Salah has been passed fit to feature, while £125m man, Alexander Isak’s fitness is once again hanging in the balance.
Manchester United vs Nottingham Forest
Manchester United can secure a third-place finish when they welcome Nottingham Forest to Old Trafford on Sunday.
United are six points clear of Liverpool in fourth and momentum continues to build behind Michael Carrick potentially taking the role permanently after an impressive spell in charge.
Forest, meanwhile, secured their Premier League survival with a 1-1 draw against Newcastle United and can now play without pressure during the final two games.
Casemiro is expected to return after missing the draw with Sunderland, and the Brazilian could make his final appearance at Old Trafford before leaving the club this summer. Manuel Ugarte is also back in training, although Benjamin Sesko remains a doubt.
Matthijs de Ligt is still sidelined with a long-term back injury.
For Forest, Morgan Gibbs-White is being assessed after recovering from a serious head injury and could feature wearing a protective mask. Dan Ndoye and Ibrahim Sangare are also nearing returns, but Murillo, Ola Aina, Callum Hudson-Odoi and others remain unavailable.
With both teams having already achieved their primary objectives, this could be a more relaxed encounter. Attention will also fall on Bruno Fernandes, who sits on 19 Premier League assists this season, one short of the all-time record jointly held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.
Brentford vs Crystal Palace
Brentford continue their push for a historic European qualification place when they host Crystal Palace at the Gtech Community Stadium.
The Bees are chasing their highest-ever Premier League finish, while Palace head into the game preparing for a Europa Conference League final against Rayo Vallecano later this month.
Oliver Glasner has transformed Palace since arriving in 2024, leading them to FA Cup and Community Shield success, and now another European final. However, the Austrian is expected to leave at the end of the season, adding emotion to Palace’s final weeks.
Defensively, Palace have been one of the league’s strongest teams with 12 clean sheets, bettered only by Arsenal and Manchester City. Their structure without the ball has made them extremely difficult to break down.
At the other end, though, finishing remains a problem. Palace have significantly underperformed their expected goals tally this season, highlighting their wastefulness in front of goal.
Brentford boss Keith Andrews has welcomed back several players to training, including Jordan Henderson, Vitaly Janelt and Aaron Hickey, but Rico Henry remains unavailable alongside long-term absentees Fabio Carvalho and Antoni Milambo.
Wolves vs Fulham
Fulham travel to Molineux needing a victory to keep their slim European hopes alive.
Marco Silva’s side have endured a poor run at the worst possible time, losing 1-0 to Bournemouth last weekend to leave themselves five points adrift of seventh-placed Brighton.
Fulham have won just one of their last five matches and their away form has been particularly poor, with only four victories from 18 road games this season.
Wolves may already be relegated, but Rob Edwards’ side have at least shown signs of resilience at home, losing just one of their last five matches at Molineux.
Goals have been difficult to come by for both clubs recently. Fulham’s last eight Premier League games have averaged only 1.5 goals per match, suggesting another tight and low-scoring encounter could be on the cards.
Fulham have won the last two Premier League meetings between the teams, including a convincing 3-0 victory earlier this season.
Everton vs Sunderland
Everton host Sunderland looking to end a disappointing run of form and strengthen their position in the top half.
The Toffees sit tenth in the table, one point and two places above Sunderland, but have gone five Premier League matches without a win.
Beto has been Everton’s standout attacking player with nine league goals this season, including six in his last six appearances. James Garner leads the club for assists with seven.
There is also added intrigue surrounding David Moyes, whose managerial career has included spells with both clubs. Moyes returned to Everton earlier this year after previous success on Merseyside and time with Sunderland during their difficult relegation campaign.
Sunderland, managed by Regis Le Bris, have been solid away from home recently with just one defeat in their last five road league matches.
Goalkeeper Robin Roefs has also impressed, recording 10 Premier League clean sheets this season.
Newcastle United vs West Ham United
Newcastle host West Ham on Sunday evening in a match that will have implications near the bottom of the table.
Eddie Howe’s side secured survival with a draw against Nottingham Forest last weekend, but their campaign has been defined by dropped points from winning positions. Newcastle have lost 27 points after leading this season, more than any other Premier League side.
Defensively they continue to struggle late in games, but their home attacking form remains strong, scoring at least twice in 13 of their 18 home league matches.
West Ham arrive under serious pressure. Nuno Espirito Santo’s side are just above the relegation zone and need points to keep control of their survival hopes heading into the final day.
The Hammers were furious after a controversial VAR decision ruled out a late equaliser against Arsenal last weekend. They have also failed to score in their last three away league matches.
Anthony Gordon may once again start on the bench for Newcastle amid speculation surrounding his future with a potential move to Bayern Munich on the cards, while Harvey Barnes is pushing for a recall after scoring against Forest.
For West Ham, Adama Traore is a doubt, but Callum Wilson could feature against his former club after seeing a goal disallowed against Arsenal.
Arsenal vs Burnley
Arsenal know victory over Burnley on Monday night could leave them one result away from the Premier League title.
If the Gunners win and Manchester City fail to beat Bournemouth the following evening, Mikel Arteta’s side will be crowned champions.
Arteta is expected to make at least one enforced change with Ben White ruled out for the rest of the season due to a serious knee injury. Cristhian Mosquera is likely to come into the side at right-back.
Martin Odegaard is pushing to return to the starting lineup after an excellent cameo against West Ham where he set up Leandro Trossard’s winner.
Riccardo Calafiori remains a doubt after suffering an injury concern last weekend, while Myles Lewis-Skelly could continue in midfield after Martin Zubimendi struggled in the previous match.
Up front, Viktor Gyokeres has impressed in recent weeks and may again keep Kai Havertz out of the starting side as Arsenal attempt to take another huge step towards the title.
