St Leger Festival 2026: History Made at Doncaster

The 2026 St Leger Festival delivered four days of high-quality racing at Doncaster Racecourse, culminating in a landmark 250th running of the Betfred St Leger Stakes on Saturday afternoon.

There was already plenty of history surrounding the 2026 St Leger as Doncaster celebrated the 250th running of a race first staged in 1776, but Saturday’s result ensured this year’s renewal will have its own place in the record books.

Highwayman arrived at Doncaster as an 11/1 chance for Joseph O’Brien and produced the biggest performance of his career to beat Enceladus by two and a half lengths. Amelia Earhart completed the top three, while Epsom Derby winner Christmas Day was unable to add another Classic to his record.

The victory was O’Brien’s second as a trainer in the St Leger following Galileo Chrome’s success in 2020, but Osborne’s achievement understandably dominated the aftermath.

Speaking after her victory, Osborne said: “This is the kind of thing that changes your life. No-one can ever take it away from you.”

It was a fitting headline moment for an anniversary edition of one of British racing’s most historic contests.

Musical Times Stars on the Opening Day

There had already been plenty to talk about before St Leger Saturday arrived, with several potential stars emerging during the opening stages of the Festival.

Musical Times produced one of the performances of the week in Thursday’s Group 2 May Hill Stakes. Trained by Charlie Appleby and ridden by William Buick, the two-year-old pulled seven and a half lengths clear of Scommessa Sicura to strengthen her credentials ahead of the major fillies’ races still to come.

Waardah was another Group 2 winner on the opening afternoon, landing the Park Hill Fillies’ Stakes for Owen Burrows and Callum Rodriguez, while Night In Vegas justified favouritism in the valuable Weatherbys £300,000 2-Y-O Stakes.

It gave the Festival an immediate sense of quality before attention turned towards another strong Friday card.

Caballo De Mar Returns to Winning Ways

Friday’s action was headed by the Group 2 Doncaster Cup, where Caballo De Mar returned to winning form for George Scott.

Sent off the 5/6 favourite under Oisin Murphy, the five-year-old defeated Beylerbeyi by a length and a quarter over the extended two-mile trip. The result added another major staying prize to his record and provided one of the leading performances on the second day of the meeting.

There was also an eye-catching success for Forbidden Fire in the Listed Flying Scotsman Stakes. Andrew Balding’s filly took on the colts and came out on top under Murphy, beating Rock Montreal with favourite Nabati back in third.

Final Objective also landed Group 2 honours in the Flying Childers Stakes, ensuring Friday continued the strong standard set on the opening afternoon.

Desert Castle Impresses Before St Leger Centrepiece

Saturday belonged to Highwayman and Osborne, but the supporting card also produced performances likely to be remembered well beyond Doncaster.

Desert Castle maintained his unbeaten record with a dominant three-length success in the Group 2 Champagne Stakes. The Charlie Appleby-trained colt, ridden by Billy Loughnane, defeated Sergei Diaghilev and strengthened his early position among the leading contenders for the 2027 2,000 Guineas.

More Thunder was another notable winner on the card, landing the Group 2 Park Stakes for William Haggas and Tom Marquand, while Air Force One claimed the competitive Portland Handicap.

The Festival then concluded on Sunday, with the Japan Racing Association Sceptre Fillies’ Stakes and the Mallard Handicap among the leading contests on the final afternoon at Doncaster.

The St Leger may signal that the end of the major British Flat season is getting closer, but there remains plenty of top-class racing on the horizon.

Ascot takes centre stage on Saturday 17th October when Qatar Racing British Champions Day brings many of the season’s leading horses, jockeys and trainers together for one of the biggest afternoons of the year.
