Three British qualifiers book Wimbledon places as Tarvet, Harris and Basing progress
British trio Ollie Tarvet, Billy Harris and Max Basing have all secured places in the Wimbledon main draw after coming through qualifying at Roehampton, making it the first time since 1999 that three home players have advanced from qualifying in the same year.
Tarvet continued his impressive rise by defeating Greece’s Stefanos Sakellaridis 6-4 6-2 7-5 to seal a third successive qualifying victory and earn another appearance in the main draw at the All England Club.
The 22-year-old also achieved another notable milestone, becoming only the third British player to successfully qualify for Wimbledon in consecutive years.
Tarvet enjoyed a memorable run in 2025, reaching the second round before eventually losing to defending champion Carlos Alcaraz. Despite earning £99,000 from the run, NCAA regulations meant to was unable to cash the full amount as he was still studying at the University of San Diego.
Having now graduated and turned professional, Tarvet is guaranteed at least £80,000 when he returns to Wimbledon next week.
Speaking after his latest victory, Tarvet admitted qualification carried plenty of emotion.
“I’m definitely very overwhelmed right now, but the main emotion for me is happiness,” he said.
“I think I have come a long way from where I qualified last year. I think I had some challenges as well, which makes these victories sweeter.
“I think it was the added pressure that I put on myself. Feeling like I had to replicate the levels and results that I had at Wimbledon. I feel like those expectations didn’t help me.”
Elsewhere, Billy Harris recovered brilliantly after a difficult opening set to defeat China’s Yi Zhou 1-6 7-6 (7-2) 6-2 6-3 and book his place in the championships.
Wildcard Max Basing also produced one of the standout performances of qualifying, battling through a dramatic five-set contest to overcome Switzerland’s Remy Bertola and reach the Wimbledon main draw for the first time.
There was disappointment in the women’s qualifying event for former British number one Heather Watson, whose campaign ended with a 3-6 6-2 6-1 defeat to top seed Maria Timofeeva of Uzbekistan.
The latest qualifiers take Britain’s total representation in the Wimbledon singles draws to 21 players ahead of Monday’s start.
Cameron Norrie and Emma Raducanu will both be seeded, with the pair set to discover their opening-round opponents when Friday’s draw takes place.
Former US Open champion Bianca Andreescu also secured her return to Grand Slam action after defeating Belarus’ Aliaksandra Sasnovich 6-3 7-6 (7-4) in qualifying.
The Canadian, who lifted the US Open title in 2019, will feature in a Grand Slam main draw for the first time since the 2024 US Open.
