NFL London: Minnesota Vikings 21 – 17 Cleveland Browns Review
It was an enthralling contest at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday, which saw the Vikings score the winning touchdown with just 25 seconds left.
The NFL finally made its long-awaited return to London on Sunday, with the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium hosting what was an enthralling regular-season contest between the Minnesota Vikings and the Cleveland Browns.
In the end, it was a 21 – 17 win for the Vikings, who managed to score their winning touchdown through their 23-year-old wide receiver Jordan Addison after he had received an excellent pass from Carson Wentz. This came in dramatic fashion, with as little as 25 seconds on the clock in the fourth quarter.
The first touchdown of the game came the way of the Browns after Dillon Gabriel, the rookie Quarterback, was able to find Harold Fannin Jr to make it 7 – 0 to Cleveland. Although Minnesota was able to respond with a 32-yard touchdown that came courtesy of Josh Oliver, who made it 7 – 7 in this game after receiving a tremendous pass from Cam Akers.
The Browns did manage to re-take the lead in the second quarter thanks to a 31-yard field goal from placekicker Andre Szmyt to make it 10 – 7 for his team. There were then no fewer than two touchdowns in what was an exciting third quarter.
The Minnesota Vikings scored the quarter’s first touchdown with Jordan Mason’s 3-yard rush, set up by a pinpoint kick from Will Reichard.
The Browns were then able to respond to this setback well – a nine yard pass from the aforementioned Dillon Gabriel found David Njoku, whose touchdown made it 17 – 14 to his side after they had been on the wrong end of what was a 14 – 10 scoreline in North London.
Will Reichard did miss a 51 yard field goal attempt to keep the scoreline at 17 – 14 to Cleveland, but then in what the most dramatic moment of the game, the Minnesota Vikings were still able to find a way to emerge victorious from this game at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with this regular season triumph was secured with just 25 seconds remaining on the clock.
Carson Wentz led what was an 80-yard drive, with the play ending in a 12-yard pass to Jordan Addison, who was able to score the winning touchdown to make it 21 – 17 for the Minnesota Vikings. The scoreline then went unchanged, with the Cleveland Browns unable to respond again despite their best efforts in the closing moments.
This victory meant that the Vikings continued their winning streak in London, having now won all five regular-season games they have played in the English Capital. This is also their second win against the Browns in London, having won 33-16 at Twickenham back in October 2017.
A number of individuals stood out in this game for both sides. Carson Wentz of course played a crucial role in the dramatic winning touchdown, and completing 25 of his 34 attempted passes. He also finishing the game with a grand total of 236 passing yards to his name.
Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison both put in great performances on the day. Jefferson completed 7 receptions for 123 yards, whilst Addison completed 5 receptions for 41 yards, as well as the crucial catch for the 12-yard winning touchdown in the dying embers of this regular season game.
Moving on to the Cleveland Browns, Quinshon Judkins had 23 carries for 110 rushing yards, whilst David Njoku was able to catch as many as 6 passes in the end for 67 yards, whilst also scoring a touchdown for his team.
It was also a first NFL start for the aforementioned rookie Dillon Gabriel, who not only played a crucial role with two touchdown passes for the Browns, but he was also able to complete 19 of his 33 attempted passes for 190 yards in total. It was a great performance from the 24-year-old quarterback.
