Autumn Internationals Twickenham
England v Japan
Saturday 24th November 2024 – 4:10pm
Steve Borthwick’s England is set to come face to face with Japan in the 2024 Autumn Internationals at the iconic Twickenham Stadium on Sunday 24th November 2024. What makes this game even more intriguing is the fact that England will be competing against a team led by their former Head Coach, Eddie Jones.
Steve Borthwick’s England side secured a creditable 3rd place finish in the most recent Six Nations, beating rivals Ireland 23 – 22 along the way.
Borthwick’s side recently faced New Zealand in two matches as part of a Summer Test Series, with the games taking place at the Forsyth Barr Stadium and Eden Park. Whilst England were defeated, they went toe to toe with their opponents in enthralling contests where they narrowly lost 16 – 15 and 24 – 17 respectively.
Enjoy the enthralling action in some style with an Autumn Internationals Hospitality Package.

The iconic Twickenham Stadium is set to host an Autumn Internationals match between Steve Borthwick’s England and a Japan team who are led by his predecessor, Eddie Jones. The game is set to take place on Sunday 24th November 2024.
Following the dismissal of Jones, Borthwick was appointed to be his successor on Monday, 19th December 2022. This game will come after his second Six Nations, and it will see him celebrate almost a year in charge.
Over the years, England and Japan have played against each other on 9 occasions. To this day, Japan has never emerged victorious in this fixture, with England winning all nine encounters between them. Their first competitive encounter came in the 1971 England Tour of the Far East, when England emerged as 19 – 27 victors at the Hanazono Rugby Stadium in Osaka.
Their first encounter took place on 24th September 1971, and their second was played a few days later on 28th September, when England were 3 – 6 winners, this time at the Chichibunomiya Rugby Stadium in Tokyo.
It would be almost exactly eight years later that these two nations would twice meet again in competitive rugby, which was during England’s 1979 Tour of Japan, Fiji and Tonga. The first game took place at the Hanazono Rugby Stadium on 13th May – England won a tight and competitive encounter 19 – 21. The second game was a more emphatic 18 – 38 win at Tokyo’s Olympic Stadium a week later on 20th May 1979.
England and Japan would then go on to meet competitively again on 11th October 1986 during Japan’s Tour of England and Scotland. Led by Martin Green, England would emerge as emphatic 39 – 12 winners at Twickenham.
Sydney was the location for England’s next encounter with Japan, which was during the 1987 Rugby World Cup. The two nations met in Pool 1, and it was England who were even more emphatic winners than in their previous encounter, beating Japan 60 – 7 at the Concord Oval. England finished second in Pool 1 before going on to be knocked out of that year’s World Cup by Wales, who beat them 3 – 16 in the Quarter Finals.
It would be 2018 when England would face Japan in competitive rugby once again, and this time, it was as part of the 2018 Autumn Internationals, with the game taking place at the iconic Twickenham Stadium on Saturday, 17th November 2018. In front of an 81,151-strong crowd, England were comfortable 35 – 15 winners over Japan.
They would meet again in the Autumn Internationals Series in November 2022. Then led by Eddie Jones, England were ruthless and emphatic 52 – 13 victors against Japan in front of 81,087 fans at Twickenham Stadium.
We now move on to the most recent competitive encounter between England and Japan, which took place during the 2023 Rugby World Cup. They met in front of a 30,500-strong crowd at the Stade de Nice on Sunday, 17th September 2023. Lewis Ludlam, Courtney Lawes, Freddie Steward and Joe Marchant all scored tries for England that day.
This rugby fixture will undoubtedly bring with it a tremendous atmosphere at Twickenham Stadium. This will be an occasion that no England fan will want to miss!
