Chelsea, who are currently led by their Italian Head Coach Enzo Maresca, are set to go head to head with Hansi Flick’s FC Barcelona, with the Blaugrana the reigning Spanish Champions. This game is going to take place during the league phase of the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League, with the match itself set to be played at the historic Stamford Bridge.

This game is being contested with two of European Football’s biggest clubs, and a victory here for Chelsea would be a statement triumph for the Blues against Barcelona, with a triumph in this fixture also giving them a boost as well as providing some further momentum as they progress deeper into the competition.

A very creditable 4th place in the Premier League last season was enough for Maresca’s Blues side to secure themselves qualification for this competition for the 2025/26 campaign. They finished in this position as accumulating a total of 69 points from their 38 games, becoming one of the five English clubs to get a place in this season’s Champions League, alongside the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City, and Newcastle United.

As one of the biggest clubs in Europe and the world, Chelsea are a club with some significant European pedigree – this includes 2 Champions League title wins so far, which were won back in 2012 and 2021. Their maiden triumph came on penalties against Bayern Munich, where they were able to beat the Bavarians 4 – 3 on spot kicks. The game itself had ended level at 1 – 1 even after extra time.

Then came their latest triumph in the UEFA Champions League, which came against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City. The winning goal on the night was scored for Chelsea by German international Kai Havertz towards the end of the first half (42’).

The other European trophies to have been won by Chelsea over the years, so far, include two UEFA Europa League titles (2013 & 2019), one UEFA Conference League title (2025), 2 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cups (1971 & 1998), and finally 2 UEFA Super Cups (1998 & 2021).

Moving on to Barcelona, they too are amongst the biggest clubs in Europe and the world, and are also amongst the clubs aiming to win this season’s competition. They, of course, have a tremendous European pedigree.

The Blaugrana have won the Champions League on as many as 5 occasions, with them lifting the trophy back in 1992 (1 – 0 vs. Sampdoria), 2006 (2 – 1 vs. Arsenal), 2009 (2 – 0 vs. Manchester United), 2011 (3 – 1 vs. Manchester United), and most recently in 2015, when they were able to beat Italian Giants Juventus 3 – 1, thanks to the goals of Ivan Rakitić (4’), Luis Suarez (68’), and Neymar (90+7’), whilst it was Alvaro Morata (55’) who was the scorer of the only goal for the Old Lady on that day.

The last time that Chelsea beat Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League was in the first leg of their Semi Final tie in the 2011/12 season at Stamford Bridge back on Wednesday, 18th April 2012. It was a 1 – 0 victory thanks to a winning goal from club favourite Didier Drogba in the first half stoppage time (45+2’).

Chelsea went on to defeat their Spanish counterparts 3 – 2 on aggregate after a 2 – 2 draw in the second leg away from home at the iconic Camp Nou. The Blues did, of course, go on to win the aforementioned 2012 UEFA Champions League Final against Bayern Munich.
