Premier League Matchday 12: State Of Play
The Premier League returns for the twelfth round of matches following the final international break of 2024.
The final international break of the 2024 calendar year is finally over, and action in the Premier League football in the 2024/25 season is set to resume, with a total of 10 fixtures taking place over the course of Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.
As things stand, Arne Slot’s Liverpool currently leads the way at the summit of the table with a total of 28 points from their 11 matches to date after securing no less than 9 victories throughout their season so far – including their most recent triumph at Anfield against Aston Villa. The Reds are currently 5 points clear of title rivals Manchester City in second place with 23 points to their name to date.
Chelsea and Arsenal, with 19 points each are the other clubs in the top four, whilst surprise package Nottingham Forest, led by Nuno Espirito Santo currently find themselves in 5th place and also on 19 points – they could move into the top four after this weekend’s action in England’s top flight.
Fulham, Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Spurs, and Brentford are all just adrift of the European places, and any of these clubs could find themselves in the top seven come the end of matchday twelve.
Bournemouth, together with Manchester United, led by their new Head Coach Ruben Amorim, are in the midtable positions right now, but both the Cherries and the Red Devils will most certainly be looking up at the upper reaches of the Premier League table.
At the bottom end of the league, newly promoted Southampton find themselves at the bottom of the table after earning just 4 points from their 11 matches so far with the Saints currently 4 points from safety.
Just above them are Wolves, led by Gary O’Neil, who are just ahead of their South Coast counterparts in 19th place with 6 points so far for the Molineux club with a gap of just two points separating them from safety.
The third and final club currently occupying the places in the relegation zone are Oliver Glasner and his Crystal Palace side, with the Eagles on 7 points at this early stage of the season with a gap of just 1 point separating them from newly promoted Ipswich Town, led by Kieran McKenna, in 17thplace.
There are a number of eye-catching games going on over the course of Matchday 12 in the 2024/25 Premier League season.
One such game will see fourth place take on fifth when Mikel Arteta’s title challenging Arsenal come face to face with surprise package Nottingham Forest, led by Nuno Espirito Santo, at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Victory for the Gunners would see them able to rise as high as third place to narrow the gap between themselves and the top two, should other results also go their way. As for Forest, they could leapfrog Arsenal, as well as Chelsea into the top three should they emerge with all three points in North London.
The biggest fixture of the entire weekend is arguably the match between reigning Premier League Champions Manchester City and Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur at the Etihad Stadium in the evening kick-off on Saturday 23rd November.
Pep Guardiola’s City will be looking to return to winning ways after a run of four consecutive defeats in all competitions – one of which was in the Round of 16 of the Carabao Cup at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in late October.
The Cityzens are known to be ruthless and it is inevitable that the Champions will regain some form in the near future, and a win – together with other results going their way – would see them get to within just 2 points of leaders Liverpool.
Spurs will be confident of coming out on top against a side that they have already shown that they are very capable of beating this season as they look to climb as high as 3rd place should results elsewhere in the country go their way over the course of this weekend.
There are several other exciting matches taking place this weekend, and you can take a look at them in full below. Aston Villa will look to get back to winning ways against Crystal Palace at Villa Park on Saturday afternoon, whilst Ipswich will be looking to produce another shock result against Ruben Amorim’s United. The Tractor Boys would then be able to distance themselves from the bottom three.
