Goodwood Festival of Speed set to welcome F1 royalty

Stars from Formula One’s past and present are set to attend the Goodwood Festival of Speed this week.

2024 marks the 30th anniversary of the Goodwood Festival of Speed, which began in 1993, and all these years later, the event is still held at the historic Goodwood House in West Sussex. The Goodwood circuit itself has a lot of history. It first opened to the public in September 1948, three years after the conclusion of World War Two.

The four days of enthralling racing action is set to begin on Thursday, 13th July, before closing on Sunday, 16th July 2023. And, if the 2022 renewal of the Festival Of Speed is anything to go by, everyone in attendance will be in for a treat with the high-octane action on display.

Over the years, several of Formula 1’s most famous faces have graced the track at the festival. To name just a few, Lewis Hamilton, Nico Rosberg, and Michael Schumacher have all participated in the event over the years.

Speaking of F1 stars, several past and present drivers will be in attendance at the 2023 Goodwood Festival of Speed. These drivers include Alex Albon, Logan Sargeant, Sebastian Vettel, Jenson Button and Michael Schumacher.

Albon and Sargeant are participating in the event off the back of a very successful British Grand Prix for their team Williams. They finished the race at Silverstone in 8th and 11th, respectively, picking up 8 points for their team.

Sustainability was an integral part of the 2022 Festival, with ‘Electric Avenue’ showcasing numerous electric cars in races involving zero emissions. These cars included the Lotus Evija hypercar, the Ioniq 5 and the McMurtry Speirling electric fan car. The McMutry, in particular, caught the eye as driver Max Chilton set a new record time of 39.08 seconds for the Goodwood Hillclimb.

Four-time Formula One World Champion Sebastian Vettel is passionate about all things sustainability and looking after the environment. The German will be driving iconic cars powered by synthetic fuels – one car he will be driving is Ayrton Senna’s McLaren.

It will surely be emotional for everyone in attendance when Mick Schumacher takes to the track. His father is, of course, the legendary Michael Schumacher, who drove in the Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2011, and with the Mercedes team in attendance this year, his son will be driving the same car.

It won’t just be Formula One drivers attending the event; astronaut Tim Peake, just like Sebastian Vettel, will promote sustainability this year. At the ‘Future Lab’ exhibit, Peake is the curator of the ‘Beyond Earth, For Earth’ section.
