Newmarket: Spring Meeting Review
Here we are going to review all three days of action from this year’s Spring Meeting at the iconic and historic Newmarket Racecourse last week.
Last week, horse racing fans came in their thousands to the famous and historic Newmarket Racecourse for the 2025 edition of the Spring Meeting and there was plenty of enthralling action that took place over the course of those three days. The racing took place on the Rowley Mile from Friday 16th May to Sunday 18th May 2025.
Over the course of the race meeting, there were a grand total of 20 races that took place out on the track. The Friday, which was the very first day of action, had six races taking place across the afternoon, whereas there were seven races taking place on the afternoons of both Saturday and Sunday.
The atmosphere for the event was fantastic, and the crowd were able to enjoy a number of incredible races and exciting action across all of the three days at Newmarket.
Here, we are going to be taking a look back at all of the races that took place at the 2025 Spring Meeting at the iconic and historic Newmarket Racecourse, starting with the first day of action that took place back on Friday, 26th May 2025.
Day One – Friday 16th May 2025
The opening race of the 2025 Spring Meeting at Newmarket was the latest running of the TrustATrader Apply Today Apprentice Handicap Stakes, which got underway at 14:18 on Friday afternoon. It was Cooperation that came out on top as the winner of this race with Jockey Mason Paetel on board. Stratocracy and Onemorenomore came in second and third place, respectively.
We now move on to the second race of the day and of this race meeting as a whole, which was the 2025 TrustATrader Novice Stakes. The pre-race favourite was Noble Horizon, who came down in third place in the end, but Wicked, the runner-up just ahead of the William Haggas trained horse. And so, it was Bedouin Prince, ridden by Jockey Dougie Costello, who won the race overall in the end.
Next up is the race that brought us to the halfway point of the opening day, which was the latest running of the TrustATrader Fully Vetted Tradespeople Fillies’ Handicap. Jamie Spencer’s French Haven came out on top with the win in the end, whilst it was Renesmee and Sixteen One who came in third. The pre-race favourite, Hot Like Me, came down in 4th place, just missing out on the top three overall.
Race Four was the Juddmonte EBF Restricted Novice Stakes, which was won by the pre-race favourite Logi Bear, ridden by Jockey Jamie Spencer. Somebody came as the runner-up in second place, whilst it was Caitrinho who came home in third place.
Race Five, the penultimate race of the day, was the TrustATrader Approved and Reviewed Trades People Handicap. Fouroneohfever had been the pre-race favourite, only to finish third, whilst Lavender Hill Mob came out on top as the winner, with Claymore coming in second place as the runner-up.
Finally, race six, the final one of day one, was the TrustATrader You Can Trust Our Traders Handicap. My Mate Kev came across the line as the winner with Fred Daly and Chris Dwyer as Jockey and Trainer, respectively. The pre-race favourite, Dapper Guest, came down in 7th place in the end.
We will now move on to the second and penultimate day of action at the 2025 edition of the highly prestigious Spring Meeting at Newmarket Racecourse that indeed took place on the afternoon of Saturday 17th May 2025.
Day Two – Saturday 17th May 2025
The race that was up first on day two was the 2025 edition of the Read Meg Nicholls’ Blog At betmgm.co.uk Handicap at 13:05 on that Saturday afternoon. In the end, it was Dark Tornado, ridden by John Egan and trained by Denis Quinn. Sterling Knight came in second as the runner-up, whilst Harvard Sound came in third overall.
Next up was the 2025 JCB Handicap, which was won by Jamie Spencer on board Arabian Leopard, followed by runner-up and pre-race favourite Fondo Blanco as well as David Egan’s Spirit Of Leros, who came in third place.
Then came race number three of Saturday, with action on the second and penultimate day of this race meeting continuing with the Bet £10 Get £40 With BetMGM Handicap. In this race, the pre-race favourite Classic Encounter missed out on victory with a third place finish, just behind the runner-up Mythical Guest and the race winner Royal Velvet, ridden to the victory by Jockey Cieren Fallon.
The 2025 Tattersalls £40,000 EBF Fillies’ Novice Stakes were next and on this occasion it Billy Loughnane on board Dance To The Music who came home in first place, whilst it was Eskimo Pie and Daretobedifferent who came in second and third place respectively. Meanwhile, the pre-race favourite Lyrics Of Life came down in 5th place in the end.
What followed was the third to last race of the second day of the 2025 Spring Meeting at the incredible Newmarket Racecourse – the Darley EBF Novice Stakes. Minhad came first, with Pole Star and Bahadur coming in third place in the end. The favourite, Gold Cup Day, came down in 5th place overall.
The Win £1m With BetMGM Golden Goals Handicap was the second to last race of the second day, and it was an Andrew Balding trained Best Adventure with jockey Shane Foley on board. It was Richard Kingscote’s Venezuelan who came in second, whilst Ethan Jones’ Squires Treaty had to settle for what was a 3rd place finish.
The latest running of the Suffolk Chamber of Commerce and USVF then came as the final race of the day. The seventh race of day two was won by Olivia Haines on board a Stuart Williams trained Rebel Path, followed by runner-up Fiscal Policy and by Royal Musketeer, ridden by Jockey Ray Dawson, who came in third place overall.
We are now looking back at the third and final day of the 2025 Newmarket Spring Meeting on the Rowley Mile, which took place on the afternoon of Sunday 18th May 2025.
Day Three – Sunday 18th May 2025
We are now onto the third and final day of the 2025 Newmarket Spring Meeting back on the afternoon of Sunday 18th May 2025. The first race on this day was the Enter ITV7 For Free Novice Stakes, and it was the pre-race favourite Treanmor, ridden by William Buick and trained by Charlie Appleby, who came out on top as the winner, followed by runner-up Vlad and Start Me Up, who came in third place.
Race two on day three was the Sky Bet Acca Freeze Handicap at 16:15 on that afternoon. Spring Is Sprung was the winner, followed by Merrimack as the runner-up, whilst Spirit Of Applause had to settle for what was a third place finish in the end.
Then came the latest running of the Sky Bet Extra Places Handicap. Cieren Fallon’s Be Frank was the horse who came away as the winner in the end, whilst it was Lunario and Flag Of St George, ridden by Jack Dace and Billy Loughnane, who had to settle for second and third place finishes.
Race Four was the Sky Bet Build A Bet Handicap for 2025 which saw a Michael Ball trained Liari who came out on top as the winner in the end, with Campaign Trail and Artisan Dancer being the horses who had to settle for what were second and third place finishes in the end.
The third to last race of not only day three, but the 2025 Spring Meeting as a whole was the 17:45 Sky Bet Proud To Support RoR Handicap. The pre-race favourite Sixtygeesbaby came down in 4th place to just miss out on the top three in this race, with Dark Cloud Rising, ridden by Tom Marquand to finish in third place instead.
Josephine Gordon’s American Style was the horse to finish in second place, whilst it was Ray Dawson, on board Marchogion, who was the winner of this race in the end.
The sixth and overall penultimate race of the day and of the 2025 Spring Meeting as a whole was the 18:15 Sky Bet For The Fans Handicap, which was won by the pre-race favourite Mutaawid, who was ridden to victory by Jim Crowley, whilst having also been trained by the likes of John & Thady Gosden. It was Sean Levey on board Bopedro who came in second place, whilst it was Richard Kingscote’s Andaleep who came in third.
Race seven, and the final race of the entire race meeting as a whole, soon arrived as the Sky Bet Club Fillies’ Handicap. Hector Crouch, the winning jockey, was able to lead Ryka to victory ahead of Saariselka and Lady Manzor, who filled in the final two spots in the top three with a 2nd and 3rd place finishing, respectively, for them both in the end. These horses were ridden on that day by Oisin Murphy and Jack Dace, respectively.
Excitement and anticipation is already building ahead of the enthralling action to come in the 2026 Spring Meeting at the famous and historic Newmarket Racecourse, which is set to take place at this historic venue over the course of three days from in May 2026.
