Bengal Tiger Wins Horris Hill Stakes as Newmarket’s 2026 Season Ends with 80/1 Shock
Newmarket Racecourse brought its 2026 flat racing season to a close over the weekend, with Aidan O’Brien’s Bengal Tiger winning the Group 3 Horris Hill Stakes and Ralph Beckett’s Haldon Pier producing a remarkable 80/1 upset.
The Final Meeting took place on Friday 30th and Saturday 31st October at the historic Rowley Mile, with two days of competitive racing providing a fitting conclusion to another busy season at the Home of Horseracing.
Among the standout performances were victories for Bengal Tiger, Aegean Prince, Siena Storm and Arabian Light, although it was Haldon Pier’s surprise success in Saturday’s Montrose Fillies’ Stakes that provided arguably the biggest talking point of the weekend.
Bengal Tiger Secures Group 3 Victory for Aidan O’Brien
Bengal Tiger delivered one of the headline performances of Saturday’s meeting, claiming victory in the Group 3 Horris Hill Stakes over seven furlongs under Sean Levey.
The Aidan O’Brien-trained two-year-old was sent off as the 6/4 favourite and justified that support with a determined performance, holding off a strong challenge from Lex Victoria to win by a neck.
Bengal Tiger moved into the lead over two furlongs from home but faced considerable pressure from the Simon Crisford-trained runner-up, who briefly edged ahead inside the final furlong. However, Levey’s mount battled back to secure the victory, with Mezzo Forte finishing third at odds of 28/1.
The result handed O’Brien another significant success with one of his promising juveniles, while Bengal Tiger’s determination in the closing stages suggested he could be an interesting horse to follow when the 2027 flat season gets underway.
Haldon Pier Springs 80/1 Surprise in Montrose Fillies’ Stakes
While Bengal Tiger had justified favouritism, the biggest shock of the meeting came shortly afterwards when Haldon Pier landed the Listed Montrose Fillies’ Stakes at odds of 80/1.
Trained by Ralph Beckett and ridden by Rhys Clutterbuck, the two-year-old filly overcame a difficult passage through the field to claim an impressive victory over the one-mile distance.
Having been positioned towards the rear early on, Haldon Pier encountered traffic as the field approached the final furlong but found a clear route through before finishing strongly to defeat So Lovely by a length and a quarter.
The result was particularly surprising given that O’Brien’s Haven had entered the race as the 4/5 favourite following an impressive second-place finish in the Group 1 Fillies’ Mile earlier in October.
Haldon Pier instead stole the headlines, following up her winning debut at Sandown with a first success at Listed level and providing Beckett’s team with a memorable end-of-season result.
Arabian Light Adds Another Newmarket Victory for Charlie Appleby
Saturday also proved successful for Charlie Appleby, whose five-year-old Arabian Light claimed the Listed James Seymour Stakes under Kieran Shoemark.
The 9/2 chance produced a convincing performance over one mile and two furlongs, finishing two lengths ahead of Nahraan, with Pacific Mission taking third.
Arabian Light’s victory added another notable result to Appleby’s record at Newmarket, following the trainer’s success with Aegean Prince in Friday’s Group 3 St Simon Stakes.
Aegean Prince, also partnered by Shoemark, had justified 10/11 favouritism with a two-length victory over Royal Playwright in the one-mile-and-four-furlong contest.
Siena Storm Shines on Opening Day of Final Meeting
Friday’s racing also featured a dominant performance from Siena Storm in the Listed Bosra Sham Fillies’ Stakes, with the Ed Walker-trained juvenile recording a comfortable victory under Kieran Shoemark.
Sent off as the 11/8 favourite, Siena Storm made impressive progress through the field before moving clear of her rivals in the closing stages, eventually defeating Nicely by six lengths.
The result completed an important Listed success for the two-year-old, while Shoemark’s victories aboard Siena Storm and Aegean Prince made him one of the leading performers on the opening day.
Elsewhere, Dove Tale provided John and Thady Gosden with victory in the Newmarket Challenge Whip Handicap, with Robert Havlin guiding the 2/1 favourite to a three-length success over Dialstone.
